PORT ST. LUCIE — A woman passenger on a bus traveling Florida's Turnpike early Sunday morning was injured when an apparent bullet shattered a window on the vehicle.

Port St. Lucie police and the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating to learn if the highway incident was connected to shell casings found just east of where Florida's Turnpike crosses Midway Road.

Police received reports shortly after 1:30 a.m. of shots fired in the 5200 block of Northwest Corporate Way. Officers located 36 spent shell casings from a caliber of bullet generally used in assault rifles, said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, spokesman for Port St. Lucie Police. Officers also recovered 22 spent shell casings from a .22 caliber rifle and two live rounds of the same caliber.

Sabol said about that same time, FHP troopers investigated an incident in which the window of a Greyhound bus on the turnpike appeared to have been shot out. It was reported near mile marker 155, a few miles to the north of where the shell casings were discovered. Sabol said a 26-year-old Minnesota woman received a bump on her head, either from breaking glass or bumping her head when startled.
