In the so-called Gunshine State, home to the most gun permits in the country, firearm violence has fallen to the lowest point on record.Woo hoo! Take that you tea-sipping Libs. You know what that proves? More guns, less violence. 1 + 1 = 2, you sumbitches!
As state and national legislators consider gun control laws in the wake of last month’s Connecticut school shooting, Florida finds itself in a gun violence depression. The Firearm-involved violent crime rate has dropped 33 percent between 2007 and 2011, while the number of issued concealed weapons permits rose nearly 90 percent during that time, state records show.
Being a person who has watched Republicans distort the news for years, I naturally followed the link over to the Naples Daily News and, well....
Mirroring the 33 percent decline in gun violence since 2007, the violent crime rate also dropped 26 percent during that time, which could suggest other factors at play in causing fewer criminal acts.Oh. So the overall violent crime rate has also dropped 26 percent. Not only should this totally confound the NRA and its acolytes who are always warning us about the boogie man who is omnipresent and lurking around every corner (BUY A GUN!), but more importantly it should demonstrate that this drop in gun violence is simply following the overall decline in violent crime.
Funny how Gun Free Zone left that out.
Here's something else he forgot to include from the same article...
Florida statistics show murderers are increasingly using firearms. Between 2000 and 2005, Florida's firearm-involved murder rate never topped 3.5 per 100,000 residents. Every year since, it's exceeded that number. And in 2011, for the first time on record, guns were used in more than 70 percent of homicides.Wow.
I know that "Guns are being used to murder more and more people in Florida!" isn't exactly the way a well-regulated militia promotes their pro-gun fanaticism, but then again that's why they excerpt only select paragraphs and cross their fingers that their astute readership swallows their "facts," hook, line, and sinker.
Meanwhile, in Newtown, Connecticut, I'm sure dozens of families couldn't be more disgusted as asshats like Gun Free Zone happy dance on the still soft graves of their children as they promote the finer points of their extremist ideology.

Let's all try to be numerate, shall we?
1. Let's all concede that all we are talking about is correlation, not necessarily causation.
2. GFZ's point is that there is a *negative (inverse)* correlation between the growth of concealed carry permits and gun ownership in Florida, and gun crime.
3. The date you quote regarding the 26 percent drop in overall violent crime also suggests the same *negative (inverse)* correlation.
4. I don't know that GFZ alleges causation, i.e. that somehow the growth in CWP and firearms ownership actually *caused* the reduction in gun crime, on the theory that criminals' knowledge of same would deter them from acting.
5. Nonetheless, you seem to think that somehow because overall violent crime dropped, that the growth in CWP and firearms ownership could not be the cause of the drop in gun crime. But that makes no sense. GFZ's theory is that bad guys know the good guys are armed, so they refrain not just from mugging with you a gun, but with a tire iron as well.
6. You may be right, the drop in crime may not be related to the growth in CWP or firearms ownership, but simply because both gun and non-gun violent crimes dropped does not disprove the theory.
But given that Chicago, with the strictest gun laws in the nation, is now the murder capital of the nation, and Florida (aka the "Gunshine State") has seen drops in both gun violence and overall violence, you definitely have some 'splainin to do Rick. Oh, and don't forget DC's high murder rate despite having harsh gun laws.
Sure, there could be other causes. Well, let's see, Florida has had Republican governors for some time...maybe that's the difference? The weather? You tell me why, I'm on pins and needles.
You realize you left him scratching his Hipster Head with all that info, right?
"Meanwhile, in Newtown, Connecticut, I'm sure dozens of families couldn't be more disgusted as asshats like Gun Free Zone happy dance on the still soft graves of their children as they promote the finer points of their extremist ideology."
Actually the only ones tap dancing over the blood of those kids are the people that still vie for Gun Control. Idiots and congresspeople (but I repeat myself)approved in 1994 the asinine concept of Gun Free Zones for schools even over the warnings of every expert in the subject. Then Columbine happened and the warning were renewed but fell on deaf ears, why? Because the same idiots much rather see bodies fall than admit they were wrong.
But this is not 1994 anymore. Even the simpleton of parents have now realized that an unarmed school is an open invitation for the criminal and the crazy. They are Hunting Preserves for the Criminally Insane paid by taxpayers in both money and blood.
Now, if you want to do something about the murder rate in South Florida, why don't you and your followers go and picket in drug corners and challenge drug dealers that are making life impossible for honest people.?
Oh yes, they may kill you since you are Gun Free.
Got it.
Miquel...you sound like a pretty smart guy. Tell me one thing that the NRA called for after the Newtown killings that they didn't even bother to mention after Columbine. I'll throw in some extra points if you can tell me why.
"Guns are being used to murder more and more people in Florida"
Shouldn't it be "More and more, guns are being used to kill people in Florida"? I mean, if the reduction in violent crime is to be validated...
(I am NOT a grammar nazi. I'm a grammar fascist.)
Gun free, Miguel? Ha ha. You make me laugh, oh Tea Bagged One. Between that and the hipster comment tells me all I need to know about how much you enjoy shooting off your mouth (no pun intended) without knowing squat about what you're talking about.
The difference between me and you is that my guns don't define me. They don't make me the person that I am. I don't belong to that culture where fear and paranoia dominates my world, although I have to say that reading your blog has made me realize that Americans have more to be concerned about from your kind than I ever imagined.
Now run along and go shoot some targets while you dream about That Day.
Nonee...you oughta pop in here more often to clear things up.
JM---I really have no idea what's causing the drop in violent crime, and neither does GFZ. Hell, it could be climate change for all I know. But I do know that an increasing number of people are being murdered by guns in Florida while violent crime as a whole goes down and I know that GFZ conveniently left that out of his post, among other things.
The difference is that GFZ ties the decline in violent crimes to the rise in CCW when there is no proven correlation.
Until there is, he's full of crap...as usual.
.
Yeah, that's what I thought, Miquel. You never disappoint.
Here's a big hint: it wears a badge.
