Your Evening Sift
Welcome to Saturday evening, readers. The SFDB Weekend Widget is still being updated in the right sidebar so check it out. Enjoy your evening Sift and don'tforget to check back tonight for the Turndown Service.
A- I always enjoy the photos Miamism Pix takes out at the Haulover sandbar.
B- Superbee interrupts his hangover to tell us about the great time he had last night at the brand new Macchialina Taverna Rustica.
The undisputed star of the meal was something so simple - rustic (BUTTERY GARLICKY) toast slices served with a dish of fondue. OMG. I get tired of fondue after about three bites, but I could have housed an entire order of this by myself.C- Arterpillar notes a controversial piece of art that appeared last night at the Rossetti Fine Art Gallery in Pompano Beach.
D- Long Play Miami chats a while with Willie J. Clarke, a man who was responsible for producing a lot of Miami's soul music back in the 60's.
Clarke was born in the small rural community of Fort Gaines, Georgia but moved to Miami when he was four. He attended college at Florida A&M and played tenor drum in the marching band. There, he began composing music. He says voices would come to him and recite poetry in his head. He then tells me he can write a song in 10,15 minutes. I think about testing him on the spot but I can’t fathom a topic that would meet his criteria. Clarke wrote songs with meaning, with a message, a strong message. Many of them were about empowering women. He didn’t write about racial discrimination or racial injustices. There were deeper, moral issues he wanted to address in the music.E- Political Cortadito provides a comprehensive update on some of the Miami-Dade political races which I could care next to nothing about.

Rick Scott: Some Things Never Change
The following is an extraordinary video primarily because Governor Rick Scott stands in front of reporters to bring on the doom and gloom and express his extreme displeasure with the Supreme Court's recent Affordable Care Act decision but then, when pressed on specifics, dodges questions claiming he hasn't had a chance to read he court's decision. Amazing.
Sorta reminded me of this Rick Scott before he developed an affinity to shave his skull.
A big "Gracias!" goes out to all you morons who voted for this stooge. WTF were you thinking? This is what you get when you vote Republican.

SFDB Saturday Morning Start
We're going to start out today on a good note with a video that shows a cancer patient and his wife getting an update on his treatment from his doctor. This scenario plays out countless times across the country every day, but it remains shrouded in privacy...and rightly so.
Nevertheless, if you've ever been there or know someone who has, you'll appreciate this clip that much more...

Your Morning Sift

Good morning.
It was a slow Friday night in the South Florida blogosphere, like it usually is. Everyone is probably gearing up to enjoy something that's on the SFDB Weekend Widget in the right sidebar, no doubt. Let's get the day started with your morning Sift.
A- Go Hydrology! gives us a lesson about the swamp from the air.
B- Coconut Grove Grapevine is seeing things.
I think Coconut Grove is haunted. We are not alone.C- Eye on Miami shows us the shiny is wearing off at a recent Marlins game. Where are all those "build it and they will come" types who were so supportive of the stadium a couple years ago?

Your Evening Sift
Yes, it's Friday night, readers. I have a great evening Sift and a solid SFDB Weekend Widget in the right sidebar. The buffalo burgers are calling my name, folks, but make sure you check in later for some hilarious late night politics.
A- Nice video that recaps the 2012 Heat season at The305.Com.
B- Big restaurant news today: Sra. Martinez is closing, reports Eater Miami.
Bernstein explained the closing, "The fact of the matter is we really want to spend more time with our son, Zachary, as well as focus on several new projects in the works that we're very excited about."C- South Florida Lawyers makes me laugh.
D- South Florida Food and Wine reviews Cafe Boulud Sud Palm Beach, another restaurant I will never eat at.
Once again, Boulud does not disappoint. If you’re a fan, you’ll undoubtedly fight for super Boulud fan status after your visit. Boulud Sud Palm Beach is truly festive and I’m sure will take the South Florida food enthusiast world by storm this summer.E- Beached Miami shares the wisdom of a Critical Mass corker.
F- Arterpillar takes a look at the Imagination Squared community art project in Pembroke Pines.
The plan is for these 1,000 wood squares to become part of a giant community mural project called "Imagination Squared." Artists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to create squares using any type of arts and crafts supplies, photographs, found objects etc. "You are limited only by your imagination and a few simple guidelines on the application," notes Vegas.G- Photos of Miami from space, courtesy of NASA, at Curbed Miami.

SFDB Quote Of The Day
From the BooMan...
Watching the Republicans react to John Roberts' ruling on ObamaCare is a lot like going to an exotic zoo and seeing animals you've never seen before. Their behavior is unfamiliar and fascinating. I guess we're used to the collective freak-out aspect of it, but they seem so stunned and disoriented. It's also kind of revealing in the sense that many conservative politicians are showing that they really believe their own horseshit.

The South Florida Blogosphere Unhinged
A couple reactions from the South Florida blogosphere about the Supreme's ruling on the Affordable Care Act...

Let me just say that when you start believing that a majority opinion of the United States Supreme Court is making America "socialist" or "communist," you've just jumped the shark and become the guy standing out in the middle of Biscayne Boulevard in rush hour with his arms flailing as he rants on about how everyone is after him.
He's out of his mind.
I wonder what their excuse is?

The Cooler
I have a decent mix of stories for this morning culled from South Florida's mainstream media sites. Here's your Cooler.
A- Herald: There goes Bimini.
Genting has signed a deal to open Resorts World Bimini Bay, a luxury boutique casino at Bimini Bay Resort & Marina in North Bimini Island. The 10,000-square-foot multimillion-dollar casino is scheduled to open in December featuring full-scale table games, slots and sports betting, in a venue similar to casinos Genting operates in London. Sources familiar with the deal estimate the cost of the casino at more than $20 million.B- Herald: Poe's goes.
After Friday, Lipson and the other customers who have visited the store for 64 years will need to shop elsewhere. Owners and sisters Wendy Poe Whitmire and Roxanne Poe will close the neighborhood landmark on Le Jeune Road and U.S. 1. Two other locations will remain open.C- Herald: Morin.
“We’ve been talking about it for the last six months,” Whitmire said. “It’s primarily because of the recession. It’s been difficult for the past four years.”
Competition from big-box chains didn’t help. “Sometimes we can’t compete with the prices,” Whitmire said. “Home Depot buys in large quantities. And during a recession, people are more [price] conscious.”
D- Herald: They write letters.
Scotty’s is just fineE- Palm Beach Post: Just another Republican lie smashed.
Here’s the setting: a sunny day in mid-April, blue cloudless skies, a slight breeze is blowing and I’m sitting on the patio at Scotty’s Landing enjoying a cold beer with friends. People at tables next to us have brought their pups, who are enjoying a bowl of water and the scenery as well. We sit around shooting the breeze and are enjoying our afternoon out.
This leads me to ask, why is anyone trying to replace this?
While the Grove Key Marina may need some renovations, Scotty’s does not. It’s a place to enjoy the view, weather and the company of friends all while wearing a pair of flip-flops and your favorite pair of shorts. There are other establishments nearby that have tiki huts and offer more refined dining. So I dislike the fact that many see older places as something to knock down and replace.
Carol Cecil, Miami
West Palm Beach — Despite predictions of $5 a gallon gasoline earlier this year, prices continue to head downward. Now, $3 a gallon gasoline is a possibility by the end of July.F- TC Palm: Bravo!
[...]
“At this point it does look like prices are going to continue to fall. If they continue to fall at the rates they have been, which is about 5 cents week after week, then it is likely that we could see prices at $3 or below $3 by mid to late July,” said AAA Auto Club South spokesman Jessica Brady.
In fact, one analyst says the era of high gas prices may have ended, and that prices this summer could be the highest motorists will ever pay.
STUART — Running with Max Quackenbos comes in bursts.G- WSVN: Life in South Florida.
These days the lean, muscled 95-year-old Stuart resident follows a strict regimen where he alternates 30 seconds walking and 30 seconds running.
And throughout a run — or really just any time someone wants to listen — Quackenbos digs into his mental shoe box and pulls out stories from his 60 years as a runner.
Almost as amazing as the fact that Quackenbos still laces up his shoes and tries to put in four miles per week running in his quiet North River Shores neighborhood is that once a week for 30 years he has gone for a run with Stuart residents Jim and Laurie Copeland.
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are looking for three subjects who attacked a 77-year-old man at his home.
Miami-Dade Police said the attack happened Sunday afternoon at Leland Stansell's home located at 8155 SW 52nd Ave.
Authorities said a woman came to Stansell's front door to let him know she would be coming back later in the day to collect some mangos. Stansell frequently sells and gives away mangos from his yard. Around 2 p.m., the woman returned with two men. Stansell started collecting the mangos and that's when police said, the men started punching and kicking him.
Officials said the subjects took Stansell's cellphone and money. The attackers tried to drag him back to his home but Stansell fought back and did not let them inside his home.

Your Morning Sift

Good morning.
I don't know about you all but I am definitely all TGIF this morning. Check out the SFDB Weekend Widget in the right sidebar and I think you'll catch the feeling, too. Enjoy your morning Sift.
A- Bark Bark Woof Woof dispels some of the Affordable Care Act myths and shares with us the real reason why some folks are upset that it passed.
The Republicans fought it tooth and nail not because they don't want a lot of people to have insurance -- they're not all evil -- but because they're not going to get any credit for it. And worse for them, President Obama will. So they did the one they are really good at: they demonized the bill and took it to court once it passed.B- Liam Crottty Photography has a buddy that could use a little help.

Your Evening Sift
There's a lot of talk in the South Florida blogosphere about the Supreme Court's big decision today. There's that, your SFDB Weekend Widget in the right sidebar that was just updated, and a lot more in your Thursday evening Sift. Enjoy.
A- Shorter Gun Free Zone...
Americans getting affordable health care means that federal agents are going to surround your house for days on end and then burn it to the ground and, hey, has anyone seen my Thorazine?B- For a little more reasoned discussion of the healthcare decision, turn to Discourse and Bark Bark Woof Woof. From the latter...
I get it that the wingers and the Orcosphere thought at 9:59 a.m. this morning that they had a slam-dunk in the making and that they were all ready to not just spike the ball but give President Obama an atomic wedgie that would have made him a one-termer. And then their hopes and dreams were curb-slammed by the Chief Justice himself.C- A cool Miami Marine Stadium video at Culture Designers.
D- Or you can read Salty Eggs' take.
Speaking of neanderthal troglodytes, the four conservatives on the court — Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Anthony Kennedy — issued a dissent that argued the entire law was unconstitutional. It’s worth noting that the idea that the law is totally unconstitutional was seen as an iffy prospect at best at the outset of this fight two years ago — even by the very people who wanted the law struck down. What this says, then, is that Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Kennedy have acted largely as political operatives in their ruling. In the beginning of the fight, even conservative legal scholars didn’t think the law could be struck down in its entirety. And yet here we are, two years later, and four of (ostensibly at least) the foremost conservative political minds in the country have embraced that very idea. The point is this: The next time a conservative argues against activist judges, you should laugh at them.E- Curbed Miami has the news that the Miami Trolley is expanding for Second Saturday Art Walks.
F- Eater Miami interviews Chef Todd Erickson of Haven after a year of being in business.
E: What has been the highlight moment of the past year that has defined Haven’s success?
The one year is a big marker, because in culinary school they teach you over and over and over again, “This is not a cakewalk, this is not a cakewalk”. “80% of restaurants fail within the first year, get prepared for it, it is what it is”, etc. And they want you to be optimistic but at the same time you need to be grounded in reality. So hitting that one year mark and realizing that people really appreciate what we’re doing as a company - that’s a huge honor.G- Miamism mentions SFDB and "love" in the same post so, well, you know...
H- Sex and the Beach updates us on the South Florida social media scene and mentions Stuck on the Palmetto, an old favorite blog of mine, so, well, you know...
An extraordinary thing has happened in Miami in these past three weeks. A group of about a dozen folks -- bloggers, community volunteers and social media professionals as well as enthusiasts, have pulled together to create a kick-ass Social Media Day for Saturday, June 30 at Zadok Gallery in Wynwood from 2-7 PM, followed by cocktails at Wood Tavern nearby.I- With the habit that some Christians have for deeming catastrophic acts of Mother Nature as some kind of payback by The Almighty, Eye on Miami points out the obvious about the Colorado fires.
J- Hold on a minute. We're not done with the Supreme Court ruling just yet because the Southern District of Florida Blog weighs in.
The Chief Justice, by joining the left and upholding the law, saved the Supreme Court from being looked at as only a political body.K- The Reid Report lists the names of the Democrats who voted with Republicans to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

SFDB Post Of The Week

SFDB selects its Post of the Week by going back and reviewing all the Sifts that we've done over the past 7 days. We find the best post of the week and note the runners ups as we judge them to be.
As is almost always the case, I had a number of excellent posts to wade through for this week's Post of the Week selection. The South Florida blogosphere continues to impress me with its quality and diversity. Don't believe me? Peruse through the SFDB blogrolls one afternoon. Let's take a look at this week's selections.
Runners-Up: Food for Thought's quality photos and, well, thoughts, as well as his knowledge of the chefs in attendance, provided a nice backdrop for a quality post about a recent "pop up" dinner, the kind of which seems to be all the rage in South Florida. Pineapple farming in South Miami-Dade was the subject of a nicely composed and interesting Redland Rambles effort that shed some light on a little known subject...at least for me. When reading Arterpillar's Q&A with local artist David Zalben, you get the feeling like you really are kicking back and listening to a conversation. The nice slideshow that accompanied the exchange was a bonus.
Winner: As you can imagine, I read a lot of posts during the week so when it's time to sit down and pick the best of the best, there are usually only one or two that I specifically remember as I start to wade through the Sifts. This week, Blind Taste's missive about finding "the best BBQ pork sandwich [he's] ever had" was the one. The post, On the Road: Ridgewood Barbecue, Bluff City, TN, was as much about the restaurant as it was the food and captured the essence of the classic backwoods Tennessee BBQ joint called Ridgewood Barbecue. Blind Taste's description of traveling to the restaurant and the accompanying pictures stuck with me and caused me to make a note to myself that if I'm ever in Tennessee, I really need to take time to visit Ridgewood Barbecue. When I find myself doing that, I know the writer has done their job and the post is of SFDB Post of the Week quality.
'Til next time, keep on blogging!

Your Morning Sift

Good morning.
Welcome to Thursday, readers. I have a full day of posting for you as well as the SFDB Weekend Widget in the right sidebar. So let's get going. Enjoy your morning Sift.
A- Go Hydrology! explains the scientific term "soggy socks country."
B- South Florida Food and Wine previews the "edgy" Rebel House in Boca Raton.
The Rebel House is edgy, fun and exactly what little Boca-land needs ( I can say that, I’ve live here for 20+ years). With the successful history of sister restaurants Charm City Burgers and El Jefe Luchador, Rebel House is a sure fire win. All the elements of success are in place. If you’re a food fan, you’ll appreciate the Rebel House, they’re doing a lot of things right and they’re not even open yet. The staff is well versed in the menu, pleasant and efficient. The bartenders are gregarious and talented. Rebel House will be open for dinner only throughout the summer and will open for lunch and brunch come season. The restaurant should be open to the public by this weekend...C- It's the off-season in Key West and Under the Sun tells us what that means.
In summer, you can go to the beach after work, have a swim and picnic supper before sunset, and see only your fellow islanders. You can go to the movies and not be crammed in next to an incessant talker or texter. You can get a seat at your favorite restaurant or bar, without having to wait. Even if the place has been discovered by the wider world. And parties are more fun. More likely to be impromptu and more mellow. Out of season, there’s no such thing as an A-list. At the library where I work, we somehow manage to keep going without advice about how things are done back in Chicago or Conneticut.D- Is Miami-Dade County Commission candidate Alice Pena lying on financial disclosure documents? Eye on Miami says yes.
Pena lists her home address for the Corporation. Alice uses the company as an example of putting Floridians back to work. You would think, in that case, it was making plenty of money, with scads of staff, however, the company is not even listed on her financial disclosure form.

A- Miami Condo Investments says the leveling of the old Camillus House is "great news for Downtown Miami."
I weaved in and out of the streets around the area and found literally just one homeless person. I truly did not expect to find much of a difference yet but the difference is there and quite obvious even to the most critical of people.B- The story behind Vizcaya's "stone party boat" at Curbed Miami.
The structure, which is actually a stone breakwater for the house's harbor, was turned into an elaborate fake boat, dripping with statuary, lush foliage, fountains, and a tea house.C- LeBron was on Letterman last night and Beached Miami posts the video.

F- Worst Pizza finds a decent pizza place that you have to really work to find near FAU in Boca.
When I held this enormous slice up to my mouth, I was quite impressed with how well the crust held up. This was a heavy slice with plenty of cheese and yet it was cooked right and didn’t fall apart. The sauce was decent at best, but the cheese was very good. Tasted like they used a quality blend here. Although crispy, the crust had a somewhat bland taste to it. I will add OIP by FAU to my list of places to eat a good slice at, when I don’t feel like having the annoyance of a server.G- Eater Miami reports that Wynwood Brewing Company has signed a lease.
H- Annush on the Causeway reveals that she is a "medical tourist" and explains how that impacts her support of the Affordable Care Act or, as she regrettably calls it, Obamacare.
Medical tourism has saved me over US$20,000 in the past few years and I’m glad that for me that is a viable option and one I will continue to use for as long as I need it. But I am not everyone.I- Discourse tells us about some companies that have provided him some good consumer experiences.
GEICO. Yes, another insurance company. Hands down the best phone service from any company I deal with. The Affordable Health Care Ruling
So, tomorrow is the big day. We'll find out whether all or parts of the Affordable Care Act are constitutional, according to the Supreme Court.
Republicans are rubbing their hands with glee because pundits are predicting that the Supremes will overturn most or all of it. For conservatives, this decision is not about whether or not a terribly broke system is repaired or improved. If they cared they would have have something workable in the wings and ready to implement. But they don't. No, for conservatives it's just another opportunity to declare victory, point fingers at Democrats, who are once again leading the way and trying to improve things, and laugh and chuckle while Fox News blares in the background and Rush Limbaugh cheers them on. That's been their world since 2008.
However, we must and we will respect the opinion of the Court.
While Republicans cheer and throw high fives, Americans will lose the benefits that the act provides. How appropriate that the same folks who boo gay soldiers, applaud the deaths of the uninsured, mock those with Parkinsons, and clap for executions will be relieved that affordable healthcare in this country will once again be unattainable for many people. It should not be surprising to anyone. It isn't to me.
If the Affordable Care Act is ruled unconstitutional tomorrow, Democrats need to get back to work and find solutions that will benefit the American people.
Why? Precisely because no one else is interested in doing it.
.
The Cooler
Here's your quick review of the morning news. Enjoy.
A- Herald: Miami Spice update.
A Miami Spice meal at Miami’s top luxury restaurants isn’t going to be as much of a bargain this year.B- Herald: Morin.
The three-course lunch will cost $23 and dinner will run $39. That’s about a 10 percent jump over Miami Spice dinner prices last year, which rang up at $35 and just a hair over last year’s $22 lunch.
But along with raising prices, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau on Tuesday also announced that for the first time in the dining discount program’s 11 year history, there will be two tiers of pricing. Dinner at what is being called a selection of “fine dining” restaurants will run $19 for lunch and $33 for dinner.
Restaurants are classified in either the luxury or fine-dining category. All Miami Spice menus include an appetizer, entrée and dessert as part of the fixed price, which excludes tax and gratuities. The program runs Aug. 1- Sept. 30.
C- Herald: They write letters.
A delightful showD- Palm Beach Post: Life in South Florida.
It is difficult to imagine a more distorted and biased television review than Glenn Garvin’s June 24 column about The Newsroom, the new Aaron Sorkin HBO show. Because Garvin hated it so much I made a special effort to tune in and was delighted.
The show has a talented cast, an exciting story line and some important things to say about the world of television journalism. It’s going to be a very popular show in the tradition of The West Wing. My only question is how can Garvin, who worships the political right, be so wrong?
Daniel Greenberg, Pinecrest
RIVIERA BEACH — A suspected member of the Buck Wild gang and a second man were arrested Monday after they allegedly robbed a food vendor who was serving meals at a day care center, city police said.E- TC Palm: Parents of the year nominees.
PORT ST. LUCIE — A woman accused of stealing from a Walmart Supercenter and a man accused of snorting drugs in a car with two children in the backseat were arrested Monday, according to affidavits released Tuesday.

A- Curbed Miami shows us the unique backyard of a classic Morningside house that's on the market.
Built in 1924, this 4,500 square foot house on a corner lot has 6 bedrooms, 4 full and 2 half baths, a pool, lots of hedgerows, and a 2 car garage. Outside, the checkerboard back yard is lined with wrote iron benches, statues, and topiaries, just to... you know... keep up with the Joneses.B- Arterpillar profiles local artist Patricia Schnall Gutierrez.
C- Soul of Miami has some photos from the 1st Brickell Art Walk.
D- Check out what's happening in the Grove on July 4th at Coconut Grove Grapevine.
E- After reading this post by Bark Bark Woof Woof let me just say it: why anyone would vote this collection of absolute idiots is beyond me.

Colorado Is Burning
Although it doesn't say, this picture was probably taken from I-25 between Denver and Colorado Springs. That's the U.S. Air Force Academy in the foreground.
I head out there in about a month and a half and this brings tears to my eyes...
More here and here.
I'll be back in a bit with your morning Sift.

Your Evening Sift
I have a very enjoyable evening Sift for you tonight if I say so myself. Enjoy, readers.
A- When Roy Black says George Zimmerman's lawyer has committed a possibly fatal mistake in his defense, it's time to start worrying if you're George...or you could just keep rooting hard for the White Guy, like Gun Free Zone. From the former...
Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara, has made his first mistake, and it may be fatal to his client’s defense. George Zimmerman must defend the charges against him with self-defense. This means he must testify in his own defense. It is hard to mount a self-defense claim without the defendant testifying. But now his defense team has committed the worse possible offense– the self-inflicted wound.B- Burger Beast acquaints us with the Grove's A.C. Icees, South Florida's original food truck.
I remember the first time someone mentioned A.C’s Icees to me and I admitted I have never hit him up. I didn’t get a “I can’t believe you haven’t had it” face but more like a “I feel sorry for you face”. But after having A.C.’s, it left me with a “where have you been all my life” kinda look right before I finished one of his lemonades so fast it left me with brain freeze.C- Curbed Miami says the soon-to-open Metrorail line to MIA is big.
The much heralded connection to the airport, with its Miami Intermodal Center "grand central station" transit hub is the beginning of a long list of new transportation options, of almost every variety, centered around downtown Miami that can't seem to stop growing.D- Eater Miami previews the July opening of a new Brickell restaurant named TIKL.
With Stojanovic's desire to have "an element of surprise in play", menu notables include a Hamachi crudo with yuzu, olive oil powder, wasabi and scallion, crispy snapper wings with a Vietnamese bok choy salad and a warm veal rillet with a slow-poached duck egg, pickled horseradish, and toast. Pastry chef Michelle Cabrera, also a Altamare vet, is in charge of the sweets, such as robata grilled peaches and a red velvet lamington.E- South Florida Food and Wine shares a few weekend "staycation" [I know, shoot me] ideas in Palm Beach County.
F- Food for Thought reviews the latest Cobaya dining experiment that was hosted by Chef Micah Edelstein of neMesis Urban Bistro.
This is French toast like you've never seen it before. Served family style for the table to share, a fat wedge of zucchini bread studded with currants was soaked in eggy custard and prepared in the fashion of "pain perdu." Oh, and it was stuffed with a creamy filling of "Bleu Sunshine" cheese from Winter Park Dairy in upstate Florida. And topped with spicy duck sausages infused with sage. And drizzled with a syrup concocted of Peruvian "hierba luisa," a grass which I've seen variously compared to either lemon verbena or lemongrass. And moskonfyt, a traditional South African product made of syrupy reduced grape must. And crumbled spiced pecans.

SFDB Quote Of The Day
![]() |
| Chan Lowe, Sun-Sentinel |
It was an interesting day for our old friend, the 10th Amendment, which reads, if I recall correctly, "Congress shall make no law that disturbs the local rednecks." Jan Brewer, the duly elected crackpot governor of Arizona, praised the Supreme Court for continuing to allow brown people in her state to be rousted for their papers by calling it "a victory... for the 10th Amendment." Of course, at the same time, the Court also exercised the little-known second paragraph of the 10th Amendment, which reads, if I recall correctly, "The various States shall make no law that inconveniences the rich guys who buy us dinner," by blowing up a campaign-finance law in Montana that had stood for 100 years. So, if you're keeping score at home, "states rights" now mean that your gardener can be asked to produce his papers on his way to your house, and a billionaire from Colorado can buy your governor. I hope that clears things up.

The Cooler
An inordinate amount of bad news dominates this morning's mainstream media. It's the world we live in.
A- Herald: Slideshow, Heat parade photos.
B- Herald: Communista!
A Miami federal judge on Monday blocked Florida from enforcing a new state law that prohibits governments from hiring companies with business ties to Cuba.C- Herald: Your afternoon rush hour will be FUBAR today.
A temporary injunction, ordered by U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore, prevents the law from taking effect on Sunday as scheduled. And it deals a blow to the politicians who backed the legislation, which was sponsored by Miami-Dade lawmakers, approved by a near-unanimous majority of the Legislature and signed by Gov. Rick Scott.
President Barack Obama will travel to South Florida on Tuesday to attend a pair of fundraisers, including one with salsa singer Marc Anthony.D- TC Palm: Life in South Florida.
The president and the pop star will appear Tuesday night at the Jackie Gleason Theater at the Fillmore in Miami Beach. Before that event, Obama is scheduled to attend a smaller, private fundraiser.
The presidential motorcade will likely tie up traffic after he arrives Tuesday afternoon.
PALM CITY —Two dogs have died and their owner was injured during a walk Monday morning when they were attacked by a swarm of suspected Africanized bees, according to Martin County Fire Rescue.E- CBS4: Chapter 2 of life in South Florida.
[...]
Lemire said he suspects the bees are Africanized honey bees, which are more aggressive than European honey bees.
"They chased the woman and her dogs about 150 feet," Lemire said.
SOUTH MIAMI-DADE(CBS4) – A prominent, retired South Florida attorney is recovering after being attacked outside his South Miami-Dade home Sunday.F- WSVN: Yet even more of life in South Florida.
Police are looking for two men and a woman who robbed Leland Stansell, 77, in front of his house on Schoolhouse Road.
“His clothes were all ripped up,” Stansell’s son Jim said. “He kept screaming ‘help, help’.”
NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- Two women were reportedly shot outside a Miami Gardens home, killing one of them and her unborn baby.
The other woman was allegedly shot in the leg but will survive. Miami Gardens Police said the victims were outside a duplex talking, at Northwest 180th Street and 40th Place, at around 12:30 in the morning Tuesday, when someone in a vehicle opened fire.

Your Morning Sift

Good morning.
Tuesday. It's better than Monday. Enjoy your rather large morning Sift.
A- If you're up for getting into it with a Miami Herald security guard, Carlos Miller helps out.
Naturally, this calls for the Third Annual PINAC Photo Protest where we will converge upon the Miami Herald building this Saturday to determine exactly what location can we legally photograph the building without getting yelled at by a security guard.B- The recent news that Baltimore is considering selling ad space on their fire trucks has Obalesque thinking.
What you want to do is sell the rights to the elected officials themselves. In Baltimore, for example, there should be an open auction at which the Mayor, City Council and school board are sold to the highest bidder, and obligated to wear the winners’ logo prominently on their outerwear. Instead of referring to the “District 4 Representative,” he or she should be known as “Councilman AT&T “ or “Mayor BankAmerica.”C- The Chowfather describes what was for "dunch" during the latest Cobaya dining experiment.
"Bacon Bits" were platted next. On the left is a lamb belly that was spiced rubbed, cured and rosemary smoked. It's resting on a naked potato salad, minted greek yogurt and pomegranate dots. The second bit featured a local goat belly that was spice rubbed, cured and sage smoked. It is sitting on on a duck egg frozen custard and crumpet. I enjoyed both bites on this unique bacon as well as the supporting cast.D- Random Pixels posts a copy of an anonymous email that makes some unsubstantiated allegations against a few Miami-Dade Police Department employees.
E- Conservatives love to complain about judicial activism, except when it's one of their own doing the talking...at The Reid Blog.
How radical is Tony Scalia? In his highly political dissent from today’s 5-3 decision striking down three out of four provisions of Arizona’s “papers please” law, Scalia launched into a political tirade, which wandered back into the recesses of American history, to a time (a better time, in Scalia’s imagination) when a state was a sovereign — like a country — that could exclude freed slaves and “Coolies.” Seriously.F- Downtown Hollywood is dying, reports Eye on Miami.
Sunday, June 24th about 4 pm I took a walk around Downtown Hollywood Florida. Harrison Street was all but deserted with dozens of empty stores and for rent signs. Most of the restaurants on Hollywood Blvd. and Harrison street seemed dark - I had to press my nose against the glass to see in. None seemed very inviting so we ended up driving to a restaurant out of the area.G- Gas prices are going down so shouldn't we be crediting the President, asks Bark Bark Woof Woof.
After all, the right-wingers were all blaming the high gas prices on him last winter, so it's only natural to think that he actually did something to bring the prices back down. Ah, but I know what you're thinking... it's a plot to win the election. The president artificially raised prices last winter only so he could drop them in the summer and have them reach the level that Newt Gingrich (remember him? He's the GOP nominee) promised last February.H- Some Blogging Guy wants you to know that traffic on I-95 is still bad during rush hour.
When I manage to get onto I-95, it is one solid block of cars. It takes time and effort to slowly, one lane at a time, push my way left until I am in the correct lane, right next to the Lexus Lanes. My average speed is 9 miles per hour on many days, if I am lucky, 15 or 20, with numerous stops along the way.I- Shorter Gun Free Zone...

Your Evening Sift
Well, that's one last Monday we have to deal with. Things were humming around the South Florida blogosphere today. Let's get into your evening Sift.
A- The305.Com visited a few websites to collect all the photos they have up from today's Heat parade.
B- It's feast or famine over at Beached Miami where today it's feast. There are other posts but make sure you check out their interview of the brand new Magic City Bicycle Collective.
How does the MCBC fit into the overall development of Miami’s bike “scene”? How will it further catalyze it?C- South Florida Lawyers makes me laugh and so do the comments.
DG: We are looking to expand bicycle knowledge to everyone. Anyone that rides a bicycle ought to know how to fix a flat. The MCBC shows curious riders how bikes work and what’s happened when they don’t. Knowing how to fix simple issues builds confidence. The aim is to encourage anyone with errands to run to seriously consider riding a bike. The MCBC will also be a place to share and grow a smarter and broader culture. Miami’s bicyclists will become smarter in the ways of fixing and maintaining their bicycles. Miami will also grow in the number of people accepted into the bicyclist community; we don’t have to identify first as bicyclists in order to be contributing members to the bicycling community.
D- Eater Miami posts a copy of the Macchialina menu on the eve of their opening.
Pirolo's menu includes a slew of antipasti - veal cheek and pork meatballs, octopus al la plancha, a broccolini twist on the Caesar salad - as well as homemade pizzas guarded by the threat "touch my silce and suffer the consequences!".E- The UM's new Student Activities Center is designed by Arquitectonica and is going to be pretty damn amazing once it's completed...at Curbed.
F- Salty Eggs review Don Rickles recent appearance at the Hard Rock.
Rickles is equal-opportunity humorist, and every demographic had the right to be slagged by his light-hearted jabs and insults. Every single person in the room felt the burn at some point in the night. From stabs at the elderly both in the front row of the audience and in his band having “passed on” during the performance, to his unbridled assault on the Seminole tribe, to the ever present onslaught of jokes about his own people, Rickles’s bit required audience members to pay close attention to keep up. His insult-based humor eschewed any sense of political correctness – to the point that repeating a lot of what was said on Thursday night could paint Rickles as a racist, sexist, and homophobe. Yet, somehow, his humor worked in a way that leveled the playing field, bringing everyone together through laughter.G- UVu Blog posts a video showing some of the sights and sounds of this past weekend's Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival.
H- Eye on Miami continues to hammer the Herald's Marc Caputo for his opinions cloaked as reporting.

SFDB Editor Positions Still Open
Almost a week ago, I put out a call for a few SFDB Editors. Actually, I've been trying to find a couple additional Editors for a quite a while now and have made several announcements over the last 6 months or so. Thus far, I've been able to fill one of those spots...after asking. I've received no other offers or inquiries.
Folks, I started this blog back in February 2008 with the idea of creating a place where the South Florida blogosphere could stop by and see what was going on with our community of bloggers and, maybe, engage in some interesting or thought provoking conversation at the same time. Many bloggers have benefited from the traffic provided by the Sifts and I've done my best to accommodate requests whenever I get them.
I applaud the Editors who have stepped up and decided to give a little back to the blogging community. To all the others who continue to be happy with the traffic SFDB sends their way but don't care to give 15 minutes of their time to assist with the selection of the Post of the Month, I have to ask: Why?
Could it be a that you already have enough on your plates and don't care to take on anything else? That's fine, but I'd like to point out that the 15 minutes or so that it may take you for the Post of the Month is probably spent every single day, if not hour, on Twitter or some other form of social media.
Maybe my outspoken political views are causing you some problem? Again, I can appreciate that but I would question why it's okay to appear on the SFDB blogroll but not act as an Editor.
So, again, I'm asking all of you, particularly those of you who are among the Top 20 Most Mentioned blogs in the right sidebar, to dig deep and reconsider taking an Editor position.
Thanks.

Sh*t Cuban-American Hardliners Say
UPDATE: The writers at Babalu Blog are still convinced that President Barack Obama is The Black Fidel Castro.
Read any Cuban newspaper or magazine from the early and late fifties you'll learn that fidel castro and his Rebeldes were the best thing since sliced bread. Almost every major media source in Cuba supported his campaign and published accolades about the man and his "fight for change."So faced with this serious threat that apparently started in earnest when Americans got affordable health care coverage, what is Val Prieto's solution?
[...]
I felt compelled to mention the above because we've faced and are facing a similar situation here in the Land of the Free. Those of you who read this blog regularly know this. You or your families have already seen this movie playing out before us. We all know the plot, and, unfortunately, we are all more than familiar with the ending.
We don't have to suffer the same fate as my island of birth as long as we are all willing to do one thing. We have to heed the words of Andrew Breitbart and GO TO WAR.Oh my. "GO TO WAR." Before the dearly departed Andrew decided to take an eternal dirtnap on a Brentwood sidewalk and was no longer able to all caps his rhetorical pronouncements like Val, "going to war" meant selectively editing videos of Democrats and yelling incoherently at Occupy Wall Streeters. For Prieto, his "war" apparently involves the internet.
We need more troops to stave off the lies and hypocrisy of the Left and their Media allies. Our greatest weapon, the internet, has already been deployed. Man it. Stay informed, read your favorite blogs, pass the information along. Use your facebook. Tweet the shit out of the truth. It's unclear at this point whether Val's "going to war" is anything like "going Galt," which Babalu proposed back in 2009. But I would highly suggest to Prieto's Army that before they sit down at their computers with their croquettes and cafecitos and defriends and tweets at the ready and prepare to launch their offensive, they need to switch to Comcast because, damn, AT&T sucks and it really blows to be right in the middle of a battle only to have your DSL go on the fritz.
But I digress.
I suppose what all this means is that we can look forward to more crude Babalu photoshops, quotes from The American Stinker, regurgitated incoherent conspiracy theories and warnings that Little Havana is going to soon lose the "Little" designation and we'll all be communists. After all, it's the power of the Internets, right?
Had there been an internet fifty some odd years ago, fidel castro would have never taken power. Mull that over a bit.Whoa.
Fifty-three years of desperation and repression avoided by keystrokes.
It isn't as wacky as Joe the Plumber maintaining that the Holocaust could have been avoided if only the Jews had handguns, but man...
...that is some sh*t, isn't it?
.
The Cooler
It's a Monday morning which means that the South Florida mainstream media is still waking. Just a few things I found interesting.
A- Herald: Sprucing up the Dania Beach Pier.
Anglers line the rail of the Dania Beach Pier, casting their lines into the water far below, sitting and waiting for the pompano, snook and snapper to bite. In their buckets and coolers are ice, water and sandwiches — and plenty of room for fish to take home.B- Herald: They write letters.
But that scene will likely change in August, when a new casual restaurant will open on the pier. City leaders are hoping the restaurant, which will likely feature an underwater camera that offers guests glimpses of fish and other sea creatures, will bring a flock of tourists and locals to the pier.
“Once you get to this location, it is beyond spectacular,” said Paul Flanigan, the founder of the Quarterdeck Restaurant, which is expected to open by late August.
[...]
Last month, Dania Beach approved spending close to $500,000 to renovate the pier restaurant’s structure. It’s also seeking to improve restrooms and customer service at the pier, Assistant City Manager Colin Donnelly said.
Rubio fingerpointsC- CBS4: No new taxes, but...
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is criticizing President Obama for ignoring the Constitution with his declaration allowing immigrant children who arrived under age 16 to stay in the United States to continue their studies.
What about Rubio ignoring the same Constitution in his support of the state of Florida’s ban on businesses that have any kind of ties to Cuba? It’s clearly unconstitutional for a state to attempt to make U.S. foreign policy. Per the old goose-and-gander theory, Rubio can’t have it both ways.
Jay W. Gould, Miami
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – Take the Turnpike or travel to the west coast on Alligator Alley? It’s going to cost you more because tolls were raised on Sunday for all state toll roads and bridges.D- WPTV: Let me introduce you to Mr. Smith and Mrs. Wesson.
Turnpike officials say rates went up, on the average, about a quarter at each tollbooth or SunPass gantry. While drivers who pay cash have seen increases before, this is first time SunPass users will have to pay an increase since 1999.
The state said the extra money collected will be used to ease congestion and pay for improvements on the toll roads.
The shooting happened around 1:15 a.m. at the BP gas station at 3300 Lantana Road, according to Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
Witnesses said the suspect was extremely intoxicated, disorderly, threatening and aggressive as he went after a man who was with his girlfriend at the gas station, Barbera said.
She said the assailant reached into the man's car and proceeded to punch him in the face with a closed fist. The victim responded by firing a single shot.

Your Morning Sift

Good morning.
Yes, it's a dreary Monday morning. Take your poncho to the Heat parade. And enjoy your Morning Sift.
A- A minority owner of the Miami Heat is suing a blogger I've never heard and Google of for taking an "unflattering" picture of him, according to Carlos Miller.
B- Man or Maniac? explains how Republicans were so wrong about the automotive industry bailout and gas prices.
C- It wouldn't be the South Florida blogosphere if a Robert is Here post didn't pop up every now and then. This month, Random Pixels has it.
Perhaps some, like me, made the long trek south for a tangible reminder that something so simple and uncomplicated once existed in South Florida.D- Redland Rambles has an example of what eating local in the Redland can be like.
As the fish cooked, Arturo tossed fresh mild watercress grown by “the old Cuban guy down the road” with spring onion slices for a simple salad dressed lightly with olive oil, white vinegar and salt. “When I eat fried fish I gotta have a salad,” he said, making another one. He cut up a variety of different colored tomatoes picked at the peak of ripeness from the field just steps away. They were also dressed with just the right amount of oil, vinegar and salt. In the farm stand kitchen, Maggie made twice-cooked crispy tostones, fried patties made from locally grown plantains and brought them out piping hot, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.E- Arterpillar takes in David Zalben's work in a Lincoln Road window and enjoys a rainy night on South Beach.
We arrived early enough for a beer at Zeke's. The place was pretty quiet inside until the wind kicked up and the rain started. As a seemingly endless stream of people came in seeking shelter and beer, you could hear signs blowing down and glasses rolling off tables outside the restaurants on Lincoln Road.F- Miami Critical Mass for dummies, including video, at The Miami Bike Scene.
G- Bark Bark Woof Woof wonders if today is the day we hear the Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Health Care Act.
One thing is for sure: no matter which way the Court rules, it will be bad news for President Obama. Why? Because a win means that the Republicans will redouble their efforts to repeal it and demonize it into the November election, and a loss means that the GOP will stand astride the corpse of the biggest legislative achievement in the history of the galaxy and rub the president's nose in it.

Your Evening Sift
Another weekend draws to a close. Hard to believe that next Sunday we'll be into July. Start thinking about your Christmas shopping. Enjoy your evening Sift.
A- I'm not a fan of Bill Maher but if you are, Bark Bark Woof Woof has a couple of videos with Maher's trademark commentary on the state of today's Republican Party.
B- One of the writers for Justice Building Blog makes mincemeat of the other in this point/counterpoint post about the Miami Heat.
