SFDB's A Few Minutes At Mauro's Pizza In Hollywood

So I've been hearing consistently good things about this place and finally decided to check it out. If you drive in, make sure you park on Harrison Street, one street south, where you miss the perennially congested Hollywood Boulevard.

Doesn't look like much from the outside...

Or the inside...

And it seems like everywhere you turn, there's a sign telling you what you can't do...

This is the area behind the front counter. Click on the image to make it bigger so you can read all the signs.

While we were waiting to order, a woman came in and asked the guy making the pizzas if they sold subs. "This is Mauro's Pizza. We make pizza." And, yes, they sure do.

$2.75 a slice, $1 dollar for each topping.

What makes this pizza so great, in my opinion, is the crust. I added mushrooms for this first-time visit because I usually don't eat a plain slice but next time I'm going plain. It really doesn't need anything more.

Best pizza in South Florida? I'll leave that up to the experts [here and here].  But I will say that this is the kind of food that deserves a trip out of your way.

Simple, delicious, blue-collar pizza...served with an attitude on paper plates.

They seem to do OK on inspections, too.

Best pizza-by-the-slice I've found in south Florida. One reason: the owners are Philadelphia natives, as is the guy next door at PRL bar where you can grab a beer to have with your pizza -- or grab a slice and sit with it and a beer in PRL. They know pizza (everybody knows beer, except Italians).

Harrison Street is one block SOUTH of Hwd Blvd.

What? You don't consider me a pizza expert Rick? I have been eating pizza since an Italian kid in Queens...my father had a pizza oven in the house. Doesn't get any better than that.

The signs look good, tight ship, the photos not so great of the actual pizza. Looks like it was unheated so hard to tell. Will go over there and test it out. Squathole we know beer too, just like wine better. The best pizza I ever had was in Queens near where my grandparents are buried. I double up on grief and pizza. Good combo.

P.S. Those mushrooms looked like they were plopped on top. They need to shrink into the topping. They also looked canned or jarred. The piece with the pepperoni looks more promising. Look at my December 30th shot again. It has white marbled patches that your slice is missing. Must have some white, but not much.

Squat...fixed. Thanks.

Genius...yeah, the 'rooms were a wasted of time. The pepperoni was a tad greasy, as you might expect. Get it plain. The pictures don't do it justice.

Another plus at Mauro's: you sit outside to eat and enjoy Hitchcockian flashbacks as the pigeons land on your table and peck at your ankles to demand their cut.

Squathole I will meet you there but INSIDE. No birds pecking...

I ate there. Had a whole PLAIN PIZZA. It was excellent. Good find Rick.

What do you have against peckers, Genius? :)

If you want to eat inside, you'll have to stand at the back counter. Or take your slices next door to PRL, and endure exotic if unpronounceable beers from Poland and Russia.

Don't like unclean birds near my food...or my ankles.

Wow. It meets your high standards, GoD? How does it compare to Vinny's pizza up in Lauderdale?

Is PRL still open, Squat? I thought I heard that it was closed.

Franco & Vinny's is crispier but I did like this pizza at Mauro's. Good color, good taste. Among the best I have had in South Florida.

Genius, check out Kings County Pizza in Aventura, In the same discussion w/ Mauro's for best NY style pizza in South Florida.

That is North Miami Beach...Will check it out.

Franco & Vinny's pizza is OK. Were it my neighborhood spot I'd be perfectly content. Mauro's is closer, and, because of the Philly influence, more familiar.

PRL is open and doing fine. Live music, art exhibitions, Polish beer. Ask for Julie Rock!
