The Cooler

Here's your quick review of the morning news. Enjoy.

A- Herald: Miami Spice update.
A Miami Spice meal at Miami’s top luxury restaurants isn’t going to be as much of a bargain this year.

The three-course lunch will cost $23 and dinner will run $39. That’s about a 10 percent jump over Miami Spice dinner prices last year, which rang up at $35 and just a hair over last year’s $22 lunch.

But along with raising prices, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau on Tuesday also announced that for the first time in the dining discount program’s 11 year history, there will be two tiers of pricing. Dinner at what is being called a selection of “fine dining” restaurants will run $19 for lunch and $33 for dinner.

Restaurants are classified in either the luxury or fine-dining category. All Miami Spice menus include an appetizer, entrée and dessert as part of the fixed price, which excludes tax and gratuities. The program runs Aug. 1- Sept. 30.
B- Herald: Morin.

C- Herald: They write letters.
A delightful show

It is difficult to imagine a more distorted and biased television review than Glenn Garvin’s June 24 column about The Newsroom, the new Aaron Sorkin HBO show. Because Garvin hated it so much I made a special effort to tune in and was delighted.

The show has a talented cast, an exciting story line and some important things to say about the world of television journalism. It’s going to be a very popular show in the tradition of The West Wing. My only question is how can Garvin, who worships the political right, be so wrong?

D- Palm Beach Post: Life in South Florida.
RIVIERA BEACH — A suspected member of the Buck Wild gang and a second man were arrested Monday after they allegedly robbed a food vendor who was serving meals at a day care center, city police said.
E- TC Palm: Parents of the year nominees.
PORT ST. LUCIE — A woman accused of stealing from a Walmart Supercenter and a man accused of snorting drugs in a car with two children in the backseat were arrested Monday, according to affidavits released Tuesday.

I guess the letter-writer was being funny. I guess.

But he misses the larger picture: it's miraculous that the execrable Garvin can even write at all, let alone hold a job doing so. Only in the Miami Hurled.

You kids stay away from Garvin -- he's mine.

Seriously, how could an editor assign that to Glennbo and expect anything else?

Next up he reviews Dan Rather's new book.
