SFDB June Post Of The Month: The Nominees

Presenting the nominees for June's SFDB Post of the Month.

Nominee #1: "Who Was Raymond Herisse?"

South Florida blog readers usually can find Liam Crotty Photography posting sets of images taken during one of the many shoots he does as part of his business. But in what constituted a rare departure from that formula, Crotty got in his car last week and drove north on I-95 to find out more about Raymond Herisse, the young man who was gunned down by police during Memorial Day Weekend on South Beach. Crotty walked and photographed Herisse's neighborhood and found a neighbor who was willing to speak to him about the man and his family.

Nominee #2: "For The Love Of Lychees"

While the mango may be king, one of the lesser known local South Florida fruits is the lychee. Redland Rambles familiarizes us with the lychee in this outstanding post that shows us how they are harvested and prepared for market at a grove in South Miami-Dade. The photos perfectly compliment the post and the reading is easy and informative. If you don't walk away knowing a little more about the lychee then it's all your fault.

Nominee #3: "Beached Miami Setting New Standard For Blogs In South Florida"

This Miami Beach 411 post did a great job capturing Beached Miami's Jordan Melnick and Robby Campbell on film and gave us some background on the origin and intentions of the blog. The post allowed us to get to know the folks behind the Miami New Times Best Blog for 2011.

Nominee #4: "Fort Lauderdale Photo Protest Proves Photography Is Not A Crime"

When Carlos Miller got wind that the Fort Lauderdale Police Department was keeping photographers away from a movie shoot, you knew it was only a matter of time before Miller was in their face with his camera challenging their authority. This was the blog post that documented the culmination of a battle between photographers and the police department in which the photographers eventually prevailed. Whether you agree with him or not, you still have to acknowledge Miller's work and talent for pushing the envelope and somehow managing to capture it all on film and eventually blogging about it.

Nominee #5: "Throwing Pizza With Chef Ivo"

Beached Miami's videos are making a name for themselves in the South Florida blogosphere. In this one, they hang out with Joey's Restaurant Chef Ivo and try their hand at pizza making. The editing is solid, the shots are stellar and the self-deprecating humor hits at the right time. And you gotta love the kitschy Eye-talian music playing in the background.

So there are your five nominees. SFDB's illustrious panel of 15 Editors will be working hard deciding which one is the best of the best. I'm going to ask them to get back to me by this Friday at 11:00 PM with their decision. The results should be announced here the following Monday.

As always, feel free to add your own thoughts about the nominated posts in the comments below.
