Your Evening Sift

Lots of good stuff tonight in the evening Sift but if you have limited time, make sure you check out Beached Miami's video from Exxotica [C]. Enjoy.

A- The Heat Lightning continues to ponder the significance of their first 364 days of blogging.
We are an exercise in non-commital blogging. We didn’t want to limit ourselves to being a pop culture, arts, news, sports or even water sports site because it’s the internet, it’s a website not a dissertation, and we didn’t have to. I did know that I was especially done with Miami-only blogging. I wanted to bring Miami to the rest of the world by including the rest of the world in Miami’s blog world. After writing Miami, bro for about three years, I was done, bro and besides, I have friends all over the country with things to say that I appreciate that I think other people here do, too.
B- Jeff Eats says Kelly's Landing is a home run.
Every so often old Jeff Eats comes across a HOMERUN…this was one of those times.
C- Beached Miami just raised the bar with their video coverage of Exxxotica.[NSFW] Hear that Carlos Miller?

D- Swampstyle contemplates the new Surfside Social Center and the state of Surfside today.
Surfside is a well kept secret. We tolerate the multitudes of mainlander beach crowds that trash North Shore Park and Haulover Beach, we begrudgingly accept the overdevelopment of Sunny Isles, the snobbery of Bal Harbour Mall and Aventura, we flick a finger at the thievery of North Bay Village and their red-light cameras. It has become increasingly difficult to maintain the level of tranquility and quality of life that made this place our blessing. But Surfside is primed to usher in a new chapter in its quiet history. We welcome you with SPF 75.
E- Eye on Miami was out there among the voters today in Miami-Dade County.
Fire station 3 in Coral Gables less than 100 people have voted (Old Cutler).

I am taking a pizza break at Steve's in North Miami. Pizza was good. Now I am at the Gwen Margolis Center. Precincts 149, 169, 147, 176,150 and 164. Voting is light here. Just spoke to a woman (African American). She said she hangs up on robocalls. She based her vote on seeing a candidate speak and reading the newspaper over the years. She voted for Gimenez. There are people with Robaina signs here (paid) and a Gimenez volunteer holding a sign.
F- The fight against visual pollution like the large advertising towers that were planned for downtown Miami has resulted in the formation of an organization to battle the blight around the county, according to Belle Isle Blog.
“Initially brought together by the Siffin project of 50 story electronic billboards on the Herald property near the Venetian and MacArthur Causeways, our group is now trying to stop the growth of electronic billboards all over our community up and down I-95, I-195 and I-395,” said Herb Frank, an activist in the Venetian Way neighborhood for many years and a member of the ScenicMiami non-profit group.

G- 20 years of a partnership dedicated to the hydrologic monitoring of the Everglades is recognized in a report that Go Hydrology! links to this evening.

H- Coconut Grove Grapevine welcomes a new Grove website to the neighborhood.

I- Over a dozen new photos are up at The Street.

Word salad anyone?

C. My thoughts? Beached Miami is doing what Heat Lightning set out to do.

I would respectfully disagree, Carlos.

The Heat Lightning billed itself as a national blog from the very beginning whereas Beached Miami is 95% local content. The Heat Lightning also exudes this air of superiority and intellectualism that you don't find at Beached. The type of content also differs in that THL also opines on politics and has more personal posts while Beached is usually reporting on an event or happening.

As long as we're talking about Beached Miami, I think they're the best blog in South Florida right now. Their photography, writing and overall event coverage blows everyone else away.

I agree Beached Miami is also Miami's best general local topic blog, though we have many fine niche blogs. However, I have to wonder if Jordan works at the blog full-time. What he does is very time consuming. Talk about commitment!
