It was a busy day in the South Florida blogosphere. All sorts of posts for you to check out tonight so let's get started with your evening Sift.
A- Ipanemic starts us out tonight with another great delivery story.
After a couple more minutes, the fellow returns with the credit card. He has ordered $12 worth of food. I pull out the receipt for him to sign it. And then this:B- Food for Thought provides a review of Gabose Korean BBQ Restaurant in Lauderhill because, of course, he likes it.
“What’s a good tip,” he asks me. “I want you to write it in.”
I ponder for a second this drunken fellow in this lush apartment, I ponder the scenario. And I recognize this moment; this opportunity for one to act without scruples. Not me. But someone.
“Two dollars is appropriate,” I say.
And then… then he narrows his eyes, leans in slightly and says:
“Make it FOUR!”
He pulls back and nods his head up and down. A self-congratulatory grin on his face, pleased with his baller move.
Making everything even more delightful are the folks who work there. Everyone who works there is warm, friendly, and helpful, always glad to make suggestions for what to order or how to eat it. It's almost the exact opposite of a white tablecloth establishment, but it is some of the best service I've experienced anywhere in South Florida.C- Over a dozen new photos are up at The Street.
D- Boy Writes Miami gives us his opinion of Yuca on Lincoln Road...and some other stuff.
Yuca is a restaurant downstairs and a salsa club/lounge upstairs. In addition to having sexy Latinas whip you in the face with their hair as they spin like a dreidel in December, they also offer salsa classes for those who lack the intricate knowledge of la rueda.E- See what $10.5 million gets you at the Continuum South Tower Condo at Miami Condo Investments.
F- Saturday's Art Walk in the Grove was a winner, according to Coconut Grove Grapevine.
Between this Saturday's Food Festival and Derby Day celebration, I didn't get to many of the galleries during Gallery Walk Night, but I did see plenty of activity at the places I did stop, and there were a lot of people on the streets. Many stayed around after the food festival and enjoy what the galleries had to offer.G- Florida is losing some good judges due to budget slashing by Republicans in Tallahassee, so reports South Florida Lawyers. Comments, too.
Anyone who knows our judges know they are distressed over antics in Tally, openly griping (ok, more so than usual) and are considering their options.H- When the hell is the wet season going to start, Go Hydrology! seems to be asking.
So it is with some sadness that confirmation arrives of 3d DCA Judge David Gersten's departure as well as Circuit Judge Mary Barzee Flores.
Some wet seasons start of early (i.e., 1997, 2009) while others sputter into June (i.e., 1998, 2000) and others benefit by a Big Rain Day right out of the gate (i.e., 2005.)I- South Florida Theater Review calls it a wrap because of lack of support from the local theater companies.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of advertising support from South Florida’s theater companies, I am forced to close this site effective immediately.J- Belle Isle Blog may have some bad news for those driving through the flooded streets of Miami Beach.
Before I started this website I had discussions with many local theater professionals who felt that due to heavy cutbacks by newspapers, the scope and, to some extent, the depth of theater coverage had declined. When SFTR launched, Bill and I were very hopeful that the theater community, which had been long complaining of the lack of consistent coverage, would respond to an internet startup offering a fresh, informed and comprehensive alternative.
With a few isolated exceptions, that has not happened. In the past month, I have made private appeals to all local theater companies, large, small and in-between, that if they believe in the work that South Florida Theater Review is doing, this is the crucial time to come forward and support us with advertising.
The response from the companies we have been so arduously covering has been nonexistent, dismissive or merely irritated. Apart from Broadway Across America, the few presenters that have come forward with modest support, significantly, have all been smaller theater companies and startups.
Meanwhile, the association has received complaints from many island residents who say they have been told by mechanics working on their cars that the underside — including brake lines — are rusting.K- Random facts about Miami from The305.Com.
President Scott Diffenderfer told Belle Isle Blog: “Ironically I took my own car in a couple of weeks ago for what I thought was the need for power steering fluid and was told I had a rusting steering column…close to $3K to replace.”
Nine Island resident Merle Weiss has a similar problem. And the Belle Isle Blog’s own car developed a rusted undercarriage, something our mechanic said “I’ve never seen on a car this new.”
Miami installed the first bank automated teller machine made especially for rollerbladers.L- Get ready for this weekend by checking out the waterfront Happy Hours in Fort Lauderdale at South Florida Food and Wine.
* In Miami Beach, laws are in the books where hot dog stands can cost you up to 30 days in jail (plus fines).
* Also in Miami Beach, persons face up to thirty days in jail for selling oranges on the sidewalk and skateboarding is not allowed at any police station.
