What Miami's Best Of Poll

I don't pretend to be up on everything going on in the South Florida blogosphere but I was surprised to learn this morning of a website called What Miami...
Founded in 2009, What Miami is THE place where residents and tourists come to find out What to Do, What to See, What to Eat™ in Miami. It is a new style of online magazine designed to bridge the gap between traditional and online media.

From business directory and event listings to local news and contests, What Miami services a large audience of locals and tourists. Using an innovative platform, What Miami brings readers and local businesses together. Readers are engaged via email campaigns, city guides, maps, social media interaction, and Miami's best website (2010 Miami New Times Readers' Poll).

The What Miami website makes it easy for readers to find all of the information they are looking for in just one place, by presenting an interactive city guide & directory that is fun and user-friendly. Major events, parties, local businesses, and community outreach programs finally have a single place to be found!
Yep, it was the Miami New Time's Best Local Website [Reader's Choice] for 2010. Who knew?

Anyway, What Miami is conducting a Best Of poll for 2011. There are all the typical categories to vote for your favorites, including Best Local Blog. The choices there are Eye on Miami, Transit Miami, Beached Miami, yours truly and "other."

So head on over and cast your vote for whoever you feel is worthy. It's a great way to support South Florida blogging and What Miami.

The Miami New Times "Best Of" is already overkill. Surprised they are doing their own "Best Of" ...

It amazes me how a new website/blog about Miami seems to pop up every two seconds here. Miami Beach 411 has been doing the "what to do, see and eat" thing for almost a decade.

I find it interesting that people use the artifical construct of "Miami" to include North Miami, Sunny Isles Beach, Homestead, Pinecrest, etc., but avoid crossing the county line into Broward or Monroe communities. To limit things to the 'Best of Miami" or "Miami-Dade" ignores the greater metropolitan area that extends from Key West to Jupiter.

For example, the best bagels in Miami can't hold a candle to Hallandale's Sage Bagels, just about a mile north of the Miami-Dade/Broward line. With the truly best so close, who cares what the best of Miami might be?

How annoying! The poll is not anonymous and it should be. I just voted with a pseudonym. I guess it's their way of collecting emails for their newsletters.

Whack - I agree there's more to SoFla than Miami but you do have to set boundaries when it comes to a niche city website. Most people in Miami won't go to Palm Beach or Jupiter just to eat out and vice-versa. (Though I personally love Jupiter and wish it were closer.)

That being said, it really should be WHAT MIAMI-DADE because obviously the City of Miami proper is much smaller than the entire county.

Wonderful.

Miami Beach 411 is the go-to for local information no matter who pops up on the scene. 9 times out of 10 they fade after a year or two and MB411 keeps on truckin'.

Whack: I like the term "South Florida"...covers just about anything and everything south of Vero.

I much prefer those that correctly identify that they are Miami (or Miami-Dade County) centric, rather than those that say "South Florida" and then only list things in Miami. Or Broward. Or Palm Beach.

Whack-a-mole,

I bet you're one of these people that resent the Florida Marlins switching their name to the Miami Marlins once the stadium changes.

There is also a "What Lauderdale," and there are similar sites for cities across the country. So the lines are drawn to serve their marketing plan, not the consumers.

Voted for you guys! Hope you win!

I don't think there's anything wrong with targeting Miami. The area and what people do is very different in Broward. The whole calling it Miami-Dade is ridiculous, there's a reason why the Miami-Dade Zoo changed its name to ZooMiami.

Anonymous, that matter changes when you're a forum moderator answering questions for people who don't know anything about Miami. Miami is made up of many different communities and "City of Miami" is only one of them. Homestead is a world apart from South Beach ... would you call those areas Miami?
