SFDB Question Of The Day

Mambi Watch has been giving due diligence to the upcoming Los Van Van concert on Sunday. In their latest post, which I mentioned in this morning's Sift, they report that the usual suspects are planning to bus people in to the Knight Center to protest the concert. Although we're all hoping and expecting that the protests will be *ahem* civil, there's a possibility that they won't and will wind up, once again, costing taxpayers and perpetuate the negative image that some people have of Miami's Cuban-American community.

Which leads me to the SFDB Question Of The Day....
Is it important that Los Van Van's concert go on or is it something that could be sacrificed in order to "keep the peace?"

Who gives a f*ck? I don't. It's a concert. I wasn't happy that Buju Banton was going to perform at the Knight Center, but my interest in not...um, ruining my life, trumped any rage I felt at him for singing songs advocating mowing down homos.

If some people can't behave, let 'em get jailed, and have to deal with the expensive (and lifetime) consequences of having a criminal record.

There's already a huge police presence around the Knight Center, so anyone stupid enough to cause trouble will likely promptly get picked up, booked, and will some 'splaining to do on Monday to their boss, that they won't be in because they're waiting to post Bail...

Oh, and I didn't answer the question, even though I thought I did: The concert should go on - although, I don't really care whether it does or whether it doesn't.

Cuba is 1.2% the size of the US. When will some people realize that most of us don't give a ^&*(&^ about them? But don't infringe on US rights and not allow people in this country to play and listen to the music they want. Of course the concert should go on. If the police arrest people who are doing something illegal or committing criminal acts, so be it. Those people should also be obeying the laws of the country they live in.

The only way to defeat the Castros is to ban Cuba's state music machine here in Miami. By demonstrating we are letting Castro know that our lives are still consumed by his presence here on Earth. This actually may make him happy, but for us it's a way to feel as if our lives still have meaning because we either have one foot in the grave or we are just miserable SOB's to begin with.

Aww, Silver, what's wrong? Did the Lone Ranger not hug you enough when you were a wee colt?

You, sir (loose term), need a good kick in the guavas, and a lesson in respecting your betters.

Other than that, I agree with you. The show must go on. And so should a civil protest.

the concert should be stopped and we should have a tea party instead.
