The Road Ahead

A right-wing operative by the name of James O'Keefe [pictured right] and a couple lackeys were arrested yesterday after the FBI nailed them allegedly trying to plant wiretaps in Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu's office, according to Daily Kos.

You know, I fully realize that politics goes in cycles and what party is popular one day is on the outs the next. President Obama is having some very difficult times right now, probably a little sooner that most pragmatists thought, but what's really difficult to watch are the people that the American public is turning to as an alternative.

Daily Kos
sums it up real nicely in this paragraph from the above-notated post.
Via Media Matters, 31 House Republicans recently supported a resolution honoring today's accused felon. These scary freaks are heroes to a frightening conservative movement that reaches from militias and racists in every dark nook and cranny of the nation clear to the senior Republican leadership in the House and Senate. It's a movement that has been flirting with armed revolution and secession, disrupting political meetings in the tradition of the German Brown Shirts of the 1930s, and carrying semiautomatic rifles to town halls and Presidential addresses. The last time right-wing terrorist nuts were ignored two of them ending up blowing up a building in Oklahoma City and killed 168 innocent people including 19 children.
While we all deserve to be a little disappointed in the ways things have gone this past year, perhaps we should pay a little more attention to where we are headed.

Kos does a great job of likening O'Keefe's outrageous, indefensible and criminal behavior to the OKC bombings. But he stopped just short of comparing him to Hitler himself. Kos was either short of breath, or he's losing his touch.

Still, a victory for hyperbole everywhere.

Well done.

Actually, I think he's merely including it in an ever-growing list of extremist activities that is becoming more and more accepted by some as nothing to get concerned about.

You know, "hyperbole."

I myself have noticed that extremists see themselves living in a threatening world where they feel justified in using extreme actions. Therefore ethics or civility are only secondary (or irrelevant) in combating an overwhelming enemy.

In this world of extremists, almost all actions are permissible. This is an unfortunate trend that I see emerging.

ever-growing list of extremist activities

Do lists ever get shorter, once they become a list? Newton sez No.

No question there are crazies out there. No question they may hear voices telling them it's ok to be crazy. No question the voices should be wary of the consequences of their actions, and in many cases should just STFU.

But it's a looong way from three dorks playing Mission Impossible to having to carry ze papers on you at all time.

Yes, hyperbole.

Paying attention to where we are headed...

Well, now that Fox News is America's most trusted source, I'm saying we are headed toward the cliff's edge.

NM,
Do lists ever get shorter?

Yes...like defensible reasons to go to war against Iraq.

To every rule, there is an exception. I stand corrected.

I don't think Kos (Darksyde) "likened" O'Keefe's criminal behavior to the OKC bombing. Darksyde was talking about "a frightening conservative movement." Not one single person's behavior, but rather the sum, of which Darksyde gave many examples.

Speaking of hyperbole, did you hear the Glenn Beck clips in the post above. Hoo boy! Till the day he dies he says.

Don't pay attention to that, Mambi. It's just hyperbole. I'm sure everyone recognizes that.

The only people I hear taking him seriously are you and a neighbor lady of mine. You at least have the good sense to ridicule him, even as you seem to hang on every word he says. And as for neighbor lady, well, she has lots and lots of cats.

Don't worry, Rick, if there is justice, I will be wrong and you will be vindicated. Beck will indeed be the pinball wizard you think him to be.

Nonee, it's not that I take him seriously or believe that he means anything that he says. It's the people who are more warped than he is who listen to a little of Beck, a little of Bachmann, a little of Limbaugh, etc., etc. and before you know it, they become another Jim Adkisson.

Don't misunderstand me: I'm not afraid of these idiots behind the microphones. The people who I'm worried about are the millions who listen to them and think they're serious and link to them on their blogs as valid sources of information and ideas. They attend their rallies and buy their books. They honestly and truly believe in them and actually want them to run for public office.

That's worth noting and not shrugging your shoulders over, in my opinion.

Moose, how do you know the exact size of people who take Beck seriously or not?

There is legitimate concern over television/radio personalities that reach millions and talk about the "poison" that is infecting society.

Al-Jazeera recently broadcast a shocking documentary on the rise of racism in America, Glenn Beck is mentioned. View it here:

Watch,

I suppose if we allow Beck to ride his broom long enough, we will all turn into flying monkeys.

Then again, maybe a house will fall on him.

I like to think of Beck as a self-correcting error. And a damn funny one at that.
