Your Evening Sift

Another week in the bag, folks. Can there be a better way to start your weekend then by taking in your latest evening Sift? Don't answer that. Here we go...

A- More stuff going on this weekend over at Moodvane.

B- Thoughts about the senatorial selection that Charlie Crist made today are posted by The Reid Report, Blast Off!, and Bark Bark Woof Woof. From the latter.
Mr. LeMieux will hold the seat for Mr. Crist, then retire in 2011 and go back to his law practice. Nice work if you can get it. Of course, that's assuming that Mr. Crist will win the election.
C- Urban Environment League shows concern for Virginia Key.

D- Worst Pizza has a report and a bunch of photos from the recent pizza tweetup at PizzaVolante.
Roughly 60+ pizza fanatics showed up at this nights event. This was the first time I have actually seen pizza left over. After serving approximately 45 pies, it would seem logical that even the biggest of eaters would submit. That means that each person roughly ate 6 slices.
E- 26th Parallel gets his property tax notice in the mail and doesn't like what he sees.
- Assessed value of my home plummeted - predictably.

- Taxable value remained virtually the same, predictably, thanks to Save Our Homes.

- Property taxes will INCREASE by at least $200 over last year. Whoa!

There are companies out there that will go to county property appraiser offices to seek tax reductions for individual home owners.

Last year I sat with the helpful folks (really) at the Broward County folks and successfully had mine reduced somewhat, but wanted to see if a professional might be able to get a little more off for me, since I need it as low as possible for the future, when my assessment muliplied times the local millage rate will determine taxes.

The company I used was recommended by the Broward County Real Estate Investors Assn and charged me $119 up front, plus 30% of any savings I reap. Supposedly this is a good deal compared to others out there. They came back to me yesterday and advised they may be able to knock an additional $700 to $1000 off my taxes, so I authorized them to move ahead on my behalf.

My value went down but so did my taxes. Lose-win I guess...

I don't agree LeMieux will just return to his law practice. First off, his "law practice" and his "public service" are identical -- he serves large corporate interests and attempts to manipulate the levers of government to benefit those interests (ie, his clients).

There is nothing illegal about that, btw, in fact our laws and our politicians encourage it.

I am sure LeMieux experiences little cognitive dissonance from this arrangement either, in that he likely believes what is good for his clients is also good for the state (or the nation, now that he will be a Senator).

So he will continue to service his clients from the nation's capital, until he passes the baton to Crist, whereupon he will continue to service his clients until another position of power within the state or national government opens up -- at which point he will be servicing his clients from inside government once again.
