How I Spend My First Ten Minutes Online In The Morning

Shamelessly stolen from ProBlogger, I liked the idea of their post, so here goes nothing.

How I spend the first ten minutes online in the morning...

1. Open up Gmail

I open up my Gmail and see what mail I've received overnight and what comments might need to be moderated [if I'm in the comments moderation mode]. Usually I don't answer any mail until later in the morning, but I'll see what needs to be addressed, at least.

2. Open up Google Reader

...to see what kind of activity there has been since the previous evening Sift. There are a few feeds that I'll check immediately, but mostly I'm just getting an idea of the volume of activity so I can mentally calculate how much time composing the Sift is going to take me.

3. Check My Stats

Usually just a simple scan of what my numbers were like for the day before and how they're trending for the current day. I also like to determine where people are coming from to see if someone has linked to me.

None of this is done before I've made myself a cup of coffee, of course.

After finishing the above three items, I'll begin the Sift and then transition into the Cooler.

So does your morning online routine look similar to mine?

Yes, pretty much, except I do it around 3:00 a.m. and before I put in my contacts -- just use the reading glasses, which helps a little -- and I don't bother with the stats that often. I read e-mails, then go immediately to check the comments on the blog to see if anyone's read it overnight. (Usually nobody has.) Meanwhile the Weather Channel is muttering away about the local weather forecast and the coffee maker is burbling away in the kitchen. I do the Short Takes, then get ready for the day, write or draft a post or two, then leave the house and get to the office. Weekends are the same except it's three hours later and I don't go to the office.

I'm thinking about getting a life, but I thought I'd rent one first and see if I really like it.

1) Open up G-Mail.

2) Open up Outlook.

3) Open up Miami Herald

4) Open up New Times and hope there are no pictures of me on their "Last Night" section.

1.) arrive at work

2.) sign into Msn messenger, AIM, Outlook

3.) check outlook email, follow up on pressing matters

4.) Internet time! Check about 6 blogs/MSG boards, interact, procrastinate.

5.) start working

Similar but not quite the same ...

1. Check GMail to see what came in since before I went to bed.

2. Bloglines to see what's new in my feeds.

3. Log into Facebook and Twitter - a quick scan to see if anything fun or interesting was posted overnight.

I check my stats sometimes in the morning but not everyday. And I rarely blog in the morning because I'm typically not up early enough.

1. check my email.
2. check the blog (to use direct links to theatre news pages that don't have RSS feeds).
3. Check Google Reader.
4. Check Facebook (a lot of theatres get updates out that way first, and an actor is always the first to tell you what happened)
5. Check stats.
