SFDB Question Of The Day

Every South Floridian has their pet peeve driving complaint.
If you had one driving bad habit that you could eliminate on South Florida roads, what would it be?

Mine would be the people who don't use the left lane for passing but feel it's just another lane for driving no matter how fast they're going. Getting rid of these people would make my life a whole lot easier.

Exactly, Rick. Its dangerous not to move over for passing traffic, and in some states there is a law that requires you to do so. Its easily the most annoying thing on SoFL roads, even more annoying than no turn signals and hazard lights.

100 percent agree. They are the cause of most of the road rage out there, I would bet.
Number two would be those who go 14 mph, don't let you pass, then floor it to run the red light.

How bout all those who have no concept what yield or right of way is.

People who wait to the last second to merge in heavy traffic, or even worse people who pull out of the normal traffic lanes onto a merging on ramp to skip ahead a few cars. Of course traffic has to come to a stop to let them back in causing traffic to back up more encouraging more people to try to jump ahead using the onramp causing the traffic to back up even more....ugh.

Only one?

After the aforementioned, I would add failure to use turn signals -- because they're either on the phone or driving an SUV and they have the right-of-way no matter what; pulling into traffic 100 feet ahead of you when you're going 40 and they poke along at 25; waiting until the light turns some other shade of green before proceeding...and then ignoring the red one; and the ancient driver with the death-grip on the wheel of the 1982 Corolla doing 35 mph in the left lane of I-95 with the turn signal perpetually on and the passenger-side seat belt dangling out the door, the buckle bouncing along the pavement and giving off sparks.

People who pull into a parking lot and just stop, as if deciding their next move, not realizing there is a whole string of cars behind them.

The failure to use turn signals. I´ve seen a lot of accidents caused by that.

Screw bad driving habits, how about bad drivers? I'd love to revoke everyone's license in South Florida and make everyone retake the licensing exam, though have it administered by the people who do it in Germany, since Germans take their driving seriously.

It might be an exaggeration but I hear they'll suspend your license if your car is too dilapidated to be on the road.

And before you say "Well Pod, you would have to requalify too...", let the record show I take public transit everywhere so it wouldn't be such a downfall to me.

I really hate it when people behind me lean on their horns while I'm stopped at a green light or in a toll booth trying to text message or dial a number. How frickin' rude is that, bothering me while I'm on the phone? Good thing I'm not armed. Yet. I'd teach 'em some driving etiquette one bullet at a time.

Rick stole mine.

It's amazing to me, whenever I go home to the MD suburbs of DC, that the volume of traffic is just as high as it is in Miami on the highways, but people leave the left lane clear, thereby allowing ALL traffic to zip along at 80 miles per hour (except during Rush Hour).

Along with Rick's, people who can't figure out that the left lane is for passing and pass on the right, thereby making it difficult for drivers who may want to get in a right hand lane to exit or to get out of a faster driver's way and also screwing up the right lane entering/exiting traffic. I usually hang out in the middle lane on I-95 until I get close to my exit. I should count how many people I see in a week who get in the right lane to pass me (when the left is clear) and then have to slam on the brakes when they get cut off by a guy hopping off the entrance ramp doing 50.

Squathole, Im hoping the serious sarcasm Im picking up on is true...

Im surprised Alex hasnt weighed in here. He was an avid supporter of, "I can drive in whatever lane I want at whatever speed I want!", when this was a discussion on SotP haha.

The a**hole nine cars back in the left turn lane blowing his horn. Oh yeah, he's gonna make the arrow...

I'm pretty sure it was more of a "all lanes are clogged and we are all going at a snail's pace anyway". Rest assured I'm going pretty fast and not in the way of anybody.

My pet peeve: idiots that weave in and out on heavy traffic, only to be exactly at the same place once a red light stops them. (US1 is their turf and Bimmers their tool). It's always amusing to ask them what the rush was.

I would like to remind you that Right on Red applies to turning WHEN THERE IS NO ONE COMING, it does not mean that you have the right of way just cause you need to turn right! So annoying...

I couldn't agree more. It drives me completely crazy with all the slow drivers blocking the left lane. It's like Florida is populated with a dense amount of professional lane blockers that just drive around all day blocking the left lane.

Florida drivers are morons, and this guy's license plate even says so ...
