Google Flags Entire Internet As Malware

This morning I got the following comment on last night's evening Sift post...
Whenever I google your site Google tells me this website may harm my computer. Am I the only one getting this?
Well, I immediately Googled SFDB and didn't see anything similar so I filed away the information as bogus.

Mystery solved
...sort of.
We're not quite sure what's going on, but a couple of minutes ago any search result from Google started being flagged as malware with a message stating "This site may harm your computer". Including Google's own websites as you can see above.

Twitter is abuzz with people reporting the massive error (also look for tags #googmayharm or #googmayhem), and it's clear that this is happening around the world. Apparently, it's happening with any browser on any platform too.

[...]

Update 2: it seems to be fine now. Lasted about 15 minutes. You can take a deep breath now and go on with whatever you were doing before.

Now we just have to wait for Google to tell us what went wrong. It's quite clear that a meltdown of this size, no matter how short it was, will be the topic of discussion for the coming days (and not only at the Googleplex, I'd wager).

That was me with the comment. First thing I do most mornings is google you (too lazy to bookmark) and I got that warning. Worse thing is you cannot get around it unless you type the whole address which is bad for people like me. Then it happened with every site I googled including CNN and Foxnews. So I went into a panic and sent you the comment. I knew you would check it out. But then it went away as suddenly as it appeared. That was weird.

Hey Rick,

What program are you (or others?) using to detect if a website is safe?
