SFDB Current News Thought Of The Day

It takes a special kind of stupid for Hamas to think that they could indiscriminately lob rockets into Israel for an indefinite period of time without Israel doing anything. And for those people who think Israel's response is overdone, take it up with Hamas and let them know that you're tired of them putting innocent lives at risk. Everyone knows that Israel takes her peace and security seriously. Why does Hamas demand that Israel demonstrate that to them time after time?

Exactly Rick! Palestinians should just sit back and enjoy being occupied. Starvation, murders, and bombings of civilian buildings are a perfect justification against a political entity. Attack the people, not the party.

Sergio. First, thanks for the sarcasm. It always makes me take a comment seriously.

Secondly, I'm thinking that if the Palestinians have a legitimate beef with Israel, and I'm not saying that they don't, don't you think that there might be a better way of working it out rather than lobbing rockets into Israeli neighborhoods? I mean, it's like a a 2-year-old poking a beehive with a stick. Does the kid really think the bees are just going to sit there and take it? Although the kid has an excuse: he doesn't know any better. The Palestinians on the other hand know EXACTLY what's going to happen next....and they keep doing it. And then, to top it off, they're outraged when Israel acts exactly the way they've always acted.

Brilliant!

There isn't any comparison between the carnage Israel visits on the Palestinians both through military force and passive repression and the pathetic response the Palestinian resistance is able to muster. Sure, plenty of sad tales and pictures of people in bomb shelters, but the casualty numbers for southern Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank don't support any kind of equivalence.

On the other hand the Palestinian resistance doesn't have any idea what the **** they are doing. For one thing, to revisit my previous point, as unpalatable as it may be, terror tactics, that is, making the opponent constantly bleed at a steady rate for maintaining the status quo have had plenty of successes in the past. But Hamas and other groups have proven themselves incapable of successfully putting up a resistance strong enough to do this. Rather than dissolve or even just switch gears they continue to put up a token resistance that both fails to inflict on Israel anything like the human cost Israel inflicts on them, but also neutralizes any mainstream international sympathy they might otherwise receive. I don't deal in moral platitudes and I am loathe to join into the "liberal media's" victim blaming, but Hamas should seriously consider a more pacific strategy.

Rick's post is obviously apologetic for Israel's repression of the Palestinians, a repression that only a disingenuous or amoral mind can equate to the terror visited on Israel, especially since the winding down of the latest Intifada and the withdrawal of ground troops from Gaza. But it contains a kernel of truth: Hamas' "resistance" is not only failing to undermine Israel's death grip on the Palestinian territories, it is positively abetting it.

Apologetic? Hardly. An attempt to be somewhat objective Definitely.

The Palestinians are getting exactly what they deserve for electing terrorists like Hamas as their leaders.

Rick,

It makes sense to distinguish between "the Palestinians" and the Hamas Party. So, two points...

1. Hamas is an entity that feeds off of Palestinian hatred towards Israel. Can anyone seriously claim that Israel's attacks will not amplify Palestinian anger?
(via Ezra Klein)

2. The rise of Hamas is, in part, the result of a very successful Israeli effort to undermine the authority and infrastructure of Fatah and the Palestinian Authority.
