Your Evening Sift

Someone tell God that it's the rainy season and it's supposed to be raining every afternoon if for no other reason than to cool this sauna called South Florida down a few degrees. My car thermometer showed 88 in Hollywood at 7:30 this evening. That, my friends, is BS.

But your evening Sift isn't...

A- Incertus takes a look at the sense of privilege residents of Boca Raton seem to possess when a horrific crime occurs in their neighborhood.
What is so special about Boca Raton that these people would be so surprised by the kind of violence that many cities not far from there deal with every day? It's not really a dificult question--Boca is rich and white, and this sort of thing just isn't supposed to happen in rich, white cities.

B- MiamiNight's Duran is not allowed to blog while he's employed by the Miami New Times.
Duran is on hiatus from Miami Nights because his new full time employer, the Miami New Times, finds our site to be a conflict of interest. Fair enough.

C- Check out the palomilla steak MenuPages Blog: South Florida consumed at Rio Cristal in Westchester.

D- The South Florida Fan Blog really likes how the draft treated the Heat.
After the many seemingly endless weeks of speculation about what Pat Riley would do in the 2008 NBA Draft, he made the biggest possible splash he could by just playing it safe. The Heat is now a viable contender to be a high playoff seed next season, if it remains healthy.

E- Tilefortlauderdale drops "A Good Day" tile at the CVS at 17th and Andrews and announces that she's taking a break for a while.
I’m not putting away my paint or calling it quits, because I love that colorful and welcoming little world … and I plan to leave my brushes and paints right on the coffee table. This isn’t an indefinite hiatus. Just taking a little break, and when I do return to the rabbit hole, it probably won’t be as frequently. But, you know it won’t be long before I return for a visit. … Maybe next week, or the week after ....

It's not that I'm "not allowed to," it's that I was specifically employed as their web editor and my task is to oversee and write for the blogs. Content I wrote for Miami Nights will just switch to the New Times' blogs, so I'll be around.

"It's not that I'm 'not allowed to' it's just that, well, I'm not allowed to."

It's OK, D, we don't think any less of you.

BTW, congrats on the new position.

Well why would anyone think any less of me? It's the kind of job I've always wanted. I'm getting paid to blog! I'm just saying the wording of "not allowed to" is sort of incorrect. No one put a gun to my head.

And I still love Miami Nights, if it wasn't for Lackner and Co. I would have never been considered for the job. They are still family to me.

Hey Duran, I've been noticing your byline and wondered if it was you. Congrats!

The MN post lead me to believe that it was a New Times decision for you to blog only at NT since it was a conflict of interest. Perhaps I got it wrong or maybe it's merely a matter of semantics.

Rick is more a matter of semantics. I didn't have to take the job; I wanted to. And I was fully aware of the things I was going to have to give up if I did prior to accepting the position.

In the end, for some of you blogging is hobby, but writing is what I chose as my lifelong career. NT is providing me with a good opportunity to reach a wider audience. How could I have said no to that?

Anyway, I hope everyone still supports me despite leaping over to work for, er, "the man." I'm consider myself very much part of our small Miami blogosphere :)

Duran,

With all due respect, Rick's initial post was accurate in saying you were not allowed to blog because you are employed by the Miami New Times.

Of course you didn't have to take the job and they didn't have to give you the job, but you accepted the job under certain conditions, one which is that you don't blog for Miami Nights, which is understandable because NT wants to gain that readership.

I really don't think Rick's post was meant to ridicule or mock you. It was simply to inform.

Anybody who has to make a living will surely understand and will not look at it as if you're selling out.

I didn't think he was mocking or ridiculing me; that didn't even cross my mind.

That goes without saying, Duran. It's actually kind of cool to see bloggers get picked up and write for the real deals.

Good luck to you.
