The Cooler

The hurricane preparedness coverage is starting, folks. Get ready. Here's some selected stories from your SoFla mainstream media...

A- Herald: What to eat when the hurricane hits.
Peanut butter (or other nut butters) and crackers: We feel silly mentioning peanut butter and crackers, but it's the quickest ''sandwich'' there is, and without A/C in the house, bread is going to get moldy quicker than you can say FPL.

B- Herald: Free mass transit in Miami-Dade County?

C- Herald: Ana Menendez on how Florida treats education.
No parent would skimp on her child's education so she could buy a new fur coat. But somehow, we tolerate the equivalent from our leaders, who treat education as if it were a nuisance expense.

It seems that no matter how bad things get, some people will always be immune. Stadium owners can keep getting rich and the wealthy can continue to enjoy the state's low taxes.

Meanwhile, our students must count on the generosity of strangers and the gambling habits of Florida's lottery players.

It will be a happy day when schools have everything they need and sports teams are forced to subsist on the quick-pick fortunes of the daily Cash 3 drawing.

A state with its priorities in the right place? Fat chance.

D- Palm Beach Post: Driving While Nude.

E- Palm Beach Post: Is that a Slim Jim in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

F- Sun-Sentinel: Jaxson's Ice Cream: Not the best but still darn good.

G- Local10: Dirty Dining's Jeff Weinsier recommends a Fort Lauderdale deli that had 5 critical violations 2 months ago. WTF?

H- NBC6: The rubber band man.

Jeff Weinsier is illustrating the purpose of his blog: the restaurant has cleaned up its act, so now it's safe to eat there.

It also lets restaurants know that if they clean up their act, Jeff will acknowledge it.

We all win.

A - because we're gettin one this year!

B - I fear this tax actually gaining approval. This city cannot be trusted with our money, why give more?

C - Menendez may not be a carpenter but boy does she hit the nail on the head here... Sad but true.

D - AWE...

E - ...SOME!

I agree - why does education always get the shaft? No wonder Florida is so low on the national list of states when it comes to education.

And what could be better than Jaxon's?
