Random Thought From Out On The Road

There's nothing more heart-warming than to read the missives of fat men sitting behind computers as they debate the ability of an oppressed people to put food on their tables without the help they've grown dependent on.

And then come to the conclusion that if there is no help, the oppressed are resilient and will somehow find a way to survive. And if not...porasito pobrecito.

I can't wait to tune in to what's written after everyone gets back from Burger King.

What the hell is a porasito?

"Pobrecito".

The premise of Val's post is ludicrous and amounts to a knee-jerk, low-blow attack on remittances. It's a classic red herring.

I like how Marc Masferrer, who is always the voice of logic and reason, destroys it in the first comment:

"Yes, it is distasteful to think that money from the U.S. may be going to support the brownshirts, but it is illogical to imply there is some sort of connection between their goonish behavior and whether they receive remittances from the U.S. I would guess they would have acted the same with or without support from family in the U.S."

Not that I am supportive of the Castro regime, but those female cops treated those protesters better than I've seen American cops treat protesters.

And ironically, they were not nearly as aggressive as the group of Cuban exiles who chased away Code Pink and assaulted me for filming the demonstration earlier this year.

Even more amazing is that neither the videographer or the photographer was assaulted even though they were in the midst of the action.

LV,

I think Rick meant to say "pobrecito".

The video is very inspiring. We'll be seeing more of this in the near future.

Don't be surprised if I pop up in Havana with my cameras one day.

This is history in the making.

No problem, Lumpy!

LV: Well, I guess I need to misspell more Spanish words in order for you to comment here. I am, as Val would call me, a "lily, white American." What can I say?

Alex: Thanks for the correct spelling.

Alex, I guess you missed that whole "because/despite" thing, eh? Of course, havingto admit the above wouldnt fit in with your pretty little argument.

You may not have an issue with the brown shirts beating the crap out of the apolitical damas de blanco while receiving money from the evil, vilified Miami Mafia, but I do. I am entitled to an opinion, no? Or are opinions only alloted for liberals these days?

Alex said...

That's such BS. Exactly the kind of moral equivalence reaction hardliners rightly point to as intellectual dishonesty.

Why stop there? Why not point out they were not lynched on the spots or sent to gulags? You may not see it as a justification but that's exactly what you are doing. There's no such thing as soft and sweet repression.

BTW Carlos, in Cuba, the uniformed cops don't administer the beatings when there are cameras around. They have the "rapid response brigades" for that.

And don't fool yourself. The cameras were permitted just so they recorded how "humanely" female police officers removed the protesters "for their own good". You seem to have swallowed that line.

The beatings come afterwards. And the kangaroo courts and arbitrary sentences. And the isolation cells, physical abuses and outright torture.

But its' all about you, right? The exiles that "assaulted" you? One old man pushed you and a few others yelled at you. That's inexcusable. But as I remember nobody dragged you into a police bus -the police actually protected you AND Code Pink. Give me a break.

Val, you are full of it as well. I "don't have an issue" with the repression? I have a pretty harsh post on my blog about it. I don't allow you to have an opinion? Show me where. You can have an opinion and I have the opinion that what you wrote is illogical, ludicrous and a red herring to condenm remittances, which you oppose.

It's very cheeky of you to complain about allotment of opinions when in your own blog contrary opinions are in short supply, deleted and banned. No jodas.

Rick, I got what you were saying. And so could have Ventanita, but I guess she thought it funnier to make fun of the gringo.

That's fine. It's pretty obvious the gringo may not speak Spanish but has a better grasp of what's right and what's wrong here.

"But its' all about you, right?"

You sound like my ex-girlfriend, Alex.

Perhaps the Cuban exiles didn't drag me into a bus, but Miami police did beat me up before dragging me to a patrol car.

And it's not all about me. It's about any American who gets roughed up by police for expressing their First Amendment rights.

It happens way too often.

And the reason the exiles didn't do more to me than what you saw is because I fought back. They are not used to that.

We both know the extent of violence the Miami exile community is capable of.

And I have no doubt that the reason the cameras were allowed in that video was for publicity reasons, but I also believe this is the beginning of more to come.

It's not going to be easy for the Cuban people, it never has been, but this is the beginning of what will be a snowball effect.

Things are changing in Cuba quicker than we realize.

Yes, I was wondering when the arrest was going to come up. Sounds like your ex-girlfriend is a very perceptive person.

Val is a girls name unless youre Val Kilmer said...

Oh god Carlos, get over it already. That beating was likely well deserved due to you being a punk touting a document that was created hundreds of years ago when annoying little piss ants with camera didnt exist. Then you talk like a tough guy because you didnt get your ass kicked by a bunch of old geezer Cubans? And I thought Valerie Prieto was the most pathetic internet toughguy out there...

I'm sorry Alex, but I did not think it was funnier to make fun of the "gringo" a term that by the way I found appalling.

I had no clue what Rick was trying to say, and the closest I got was "parasito" which made no sense.

I guess you find it funnier to make fun of the "hardliner" babalusian, b/c after all that is all you see, than dare to think that maybe I had no clue what you were saying.

Once again, with no incitement whatsoever, you choose to disrespect me when I've never even as much as called you a liberal. Guess I just did. Sue me.

Rick, I don't comment here b/c frankly I don't come around much. I don't like this format and SOTP was a lot more enjoyable because of your breadth of topics outside of Miami.

Rick said...

LV: a couple things.

One, SotP was a SoFla blog that dealt with SoFla topics with an occasional diversion into politics (like SFDB) or SoFla CA topics (like SFDB). So I don't understand your comment that SotP's "breadth of topics outside of Miami" differs from SFDB.

Two, if you're a Wildblue ISP customer in Colorado then your comment that you don't come around here too often is patently false, and you know it.

So, whatever, LV. Nothing surprises me anymore.

La Ventanita said...

Rick,

I don't live in Colorado by a longshot; I live in New England and I thought you knew this since I've never made it a secret, and actually mentioned it quite a few times in my comments at SOTP. So whatever back Rick.

Secondly, you covered national politics at SOTP which go outside the Miami boundaries.

This blog you are on is basically an aggregator of SoFla blogs. SOTP had 100% original content. There are major differences.

You know what doesn't surprise me? How you always choose to accuse and judge first before having the facts.

Rick said...

I thought for sure you said you were studying in Colorado. If not, then my mistake.

Sheesh. I'm not going to sit here and argue your perceptions of two blogs I've written for. Obviously, the formats are different. Obviously, the content isn't exactly like SotP. And thanks for informing me that my blog was an aggregator! I had no idea!

Tell me whne you're through and I can say, "Thanks for stopping by! It was great to hear from you again."

Ugh.

Sounds like a couple of you need to sprinkle some "Lighten Up" dust on your cornflakes today.
