Hey, it looks like we got a horse race with the Post of the Month voting. I'm thinking that a couple of the nominees have called in support but that's cool and totally within the spirit of the thing. If you haven't yet voted, please do!
On to the Evening Sift...
A- I share Habla Mierda's view on the new found access Cubans have to hotels, cell phones and rental cars.
B- Justice Building Blog borrows a hilarious post describing the differences between school in 1958 and now. A sample...
Scenario : Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
1958 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2008 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.
C- I could be wrong but it sounds like Some Cranky Guy's wife slipped some E in his OJ this morning.
D- Mayor Manny declares Earth Hour a success and points us to an American Way Magazine article in which prominent Miamians share their secret spots around town. Someone show Manny how to link.
E- [redacted] describes Miami's danger from a newbie's standpoint.
Miami is a different kind of dangerous. It’s not just hazardous at times. Instead, it carries an air of danger at all times, as though the city itself has a general disregard (even a distaste) for safety. Just the other day, while watching a woman make an illegal 3-point turn in the middle of a busy intersection with a cop waiting patiently right behind her, Brooke commented, “I want to get a gun. Just so I can see what you have to do to get in trouble here.”
Give him 6 months and I think he'll finally realize there are no traffic laws in South Florida.
F- Put your money where your mouth is and support Joe, via Miami-Dade Dems.
G- The (covert) overt has some shots of some pretty impressive urban art murals in Wynwood.
H- Just what the world needs, more Burger King Whoppers, via MenuPages Blog: South Florida.
I- Homestead is Home shows us why some South Florida drivers are so bad.
J- Transit Miami writes a helluva letter to the Miami Herald.

Re. A: That's a false dichotomy. It doesn't have to be a choice between Raul-led minireforms and half-baked military invasions (or embargoes, for that matter). See Germany and most of Eastern Europe for examples.
The minireforms so far are a divertimento. Let's see if there's appropriate pressure inside and outside to get real reforms.
Re. F: Word.
@alex
So you're advocating that mob rule and crime syndicates controlling all business and enforcing with extreme street violence is preferable to a gradual decentralization of power?
Eastern Europe's transition didn't exactly go smoothly and there are still many lingering problems in many of the nations.
Yes, that's exactly what I'm advocating.
How is crime syndicates controlling all business and enforcing with extreme street violence any different than what exists now?
Can we not fool ourselves into thinking that any transition of economic control will involve anything other than a privatization of industry from the government to itself? Please?
F- This is one of those rare opportunities where a campaign can be cast in something other than partisan terms. It's an opportunity to free the mind to think. Honestly, even if your conclusion is the same. At least it will be yours.
