Your Evening Sift

Busy Sunday. Lots of stuff to get to tonight.

A- Miami Beach Condo Investments tells us not to look to South Beach for real estate deals. Make sure you read the comments.
The foreclosure condo at Bentley Beach closed for $459,900 on March 26, 2008. Again, it was listed for $379,900. Someone bid through the asking price by $80,000!

B- Bacardi & Diet and MiamiNights once again, and for the last time this year, share with us their WMC stories.

C- The (covert) overt doesn't dig the Red Light.
it's in a great location. i love the concept. i love the river. i love the prices. i love the late night hours. i want to love red light… but man, was that a surprisingly disappointing experience.

D- Find out from Miami-Dade Dems what the Putney Challenge is. Hint: it has something to do with the wet foot/dry foot policy.

E- FTL Today gives Fajitas Spanish/Mexican Restaurant in Oakland Park a glowing review and a B+.
If you are a fan of Latin food, we encourage you to give them a try. We will definitely be going back to try the fajitas (yes they actually serve them) and hope they keep up the great work.

F- Miami Dish gives us a look at the Coral Gables Food and Wine Festival this past Thursday.

G- The follies of paying less taxes and expecting the same government services and quality of education, from Incertus and Eye on Miami.

I should start by noting that this ramble is apropos of nothing. Anyhow, there was a time that I believed that FL would always be my home. Yes, there were problems with education, exaggerated growth, and lack of economic development to name a few problems. All in all, though, it was a reasonable price to be paid for life in a truly beautiful place.

A state, any state, is a little like a product off the shelf. Part of the quality of a state is where its located, and in FL we get beach, sunshine, etc. The other part of the product is services. From the looks of it, our Legislature wants that part of the product to be like that of the developing world.

I can't describe how hard it is to be witness to the undermining of this place, my home. You cant just re-raise the taxes that were lowered in FL without serious impacts. You can't just rebuild programs on the fly. It would take so long to recover from the underinvestment in this product. So, to watch the Legislature do this is to helplessly watch my state drift into economic misery.

Sure there will always be wealthy people here - in Miami, on Palm Beach. But they won't actually live here. Our government is creating a "resort" economy. And, I fear, we will look like so many other places with this ignominious fate, like Rio de Janeiro. A place safe and beautiful for wealthy outsiders who can fly home, but a hell for the locals.

Sorry for the drama, the Incertus and EoM posts just uncapped a bit of sadness this Sunday night. But thank you to you, and thank you to them. We need to know this. We need to see this.

My girlfriend (and co-blogger) is a native, so we talk about this a lot. She doesn't want to leave--her family is here, her whole life is here--but she's afraid that Florida is turning into a place where, as she put it, the only people left will be the rich people and the people who rob them. And Blackwater, to protect the rich people from everyone else. Rio is probably a good comparison.

You know, the more you know the worse it gets. Jowei Chen did an analysis of the hurricane-damage disbursements and found this...

"Collectively, these results suggest the Bush administration maximized its 2004 vote share by concentrating FEMA disaster aid among core Republicans."
