Your Evening Sift

You guys finally ran out of steam and made this Hump Day a little easier for me. A smaller sampling, but good stuff nonetheless...

A- Off the top, Habla Mierda has a hilarious clip of Hillary Clinton's much-discussed visit to Bosnia years ago.

B- Nexxt Cafe closes in Coral Gables, according to MenuPages Blog: South Florida. I blame Tere.

C- Miamism explains the current status of the Miami condo market.
There IS a lot of inventory, and prices have dropped in Miami. There will be even more inventory by the end of the year and prices will have dropped a bit more. Is this a time to buy a Miami or Miami Beach Condo for a short term investment? In my opinion, that would be a "NO" - but every situation needs to be assessed individually.

D- Transit Miami does us all a favor and explains Miami 21.

E- Cuban Triangle posts some interesting information on some of the small changes that have come into effect in Cuba since Raul assumed power. You know these things won't even be mentioned at another South Florida Cuban-American blog.

F- FTL Today shares the recipe for Virgin Sex on the Beach. That should be good for a few extra hits tonight here at SFDB.

G- Great Quote of the Day from Blast Off!

Actually, raul's "reforms" have been discussed at said blog. Of course, we take a slightly more pessimistic view of it than Phil, who's anti-embargo, does.

BTW, Phil Peters is not from South Florida, and neither is his blog. He works for the Lexington Institute in DC. Just thought I'd mention that since you focus on South Florida blogs at this site.

That's why it's categorized in Other Interesting Reads, but thanks for the heads up.

Actually, I think Nexxt blames me, too!

B: count me as one of the people who are happy Nexxt closed, even though I never went. Had enough with the surly attitude and the cream-and-salt laden food with the one in Lincoln Road. Maybe it was karma from stealing their menu from Cheesecake factory. You can get away with it once, not twice.

E: I too, have a pesimistic view of the "little by little" changes in Cuba, but for different reasons. My fear is that if Raul ends up making some economic concessions and lifting prohibitions. While it will make life easier in the island, it'll also will bring in the Chinatization of Cuba; economic aperture with political repression. It looks exactly the same, including political control in the hands of the Army and loyal technocrats.

It's a better state of affairs than the current one, but it's not true democracy. China is banking on people's natural inclination to chose economic prosperity to perpetuate its repressive political system. (if Raul really delivers some minor improvements, watch as Cubans will start saying "with Raul we live better"). I don't want that for Cuba.

The difference I'm hoping for is that Cuba is not an enormous power like China and it won't work out for Raul.

Bye Bye Nexxt. We won't miss you in the gables.
My firend's daughter worked there for a while and she wouldn't eat there.
They also didn't give their employees any credit toward parking and it was $9 a shift for her to park there.
