Your Evening Sift

***New Blog Alert*** Obablesque is the kinda sorta new kid on the block to the South Florida blogosphere. If you haven't done so already, drop on by and say hello or hola, as you prefer.

A- When you're a Cuban-American Democrat and you strike another man with your fists, you deserve to be mocked and ridiculed. When you're a Cuban-American Republican and you flip off women, you should be proud and blog about it.

So concludes this evening's lesson in "class" from the babalu boys.

B- On the opposite end of the intellectual spectrum *ahem*, the Cuban Triangle points out the utter hypocrisy of the Bush Administration's foreign policy with Cuba.

C- Spangdish really, really thinks the Herald's Food section sucks. Really.

D- Miami Nights revisits Ladies Night at the Doral Ale House (I never thought they traveled west of I-95) and, well...
But Tuesday Ladies night, pull the lever for the gallows please.

E- MenuPages Blog: South Florida has two posts of note today. The first one details some changes to the Burger King menu including the addition of something called the Angry Whopper. The Angry Whopper has bacon, cheese, and just enough calories to replenish those you would have burned on that run from your house in Kendall to, say, Tampa. And in the second post, we find out, hopefully not too late, where to find a good cup of hot chocolate in South Florida.

F- Is John McCain even eligible to be President of the United States, asks Broward's Blog.

G- Discourse brings to our attention another inspiring political video.

H- A Blue 1/1.5 going for under $250K? So says Miami Condo Investment.

I- Classic photo at Miamism Pix.

Re. D: by coincidence I was at Kendall's Ale House last night, meeting some Kendallites. Let me tell you, I don't know about Doral, but the honey factor was high at Kendall (granted, there was a lot of what they described as well). I know Miami Nights are used to a higher grade of skankitude at the Beach, etc; but the rest of us mere mortals may be pleasantly surprised when venturing out to the burbs.

"Obalesque," eh? Obviously a pervert and a creep, and maybe even an alcoholic or dyslexic or sumpthing.

I don't think you quite got the point across on how much I hate the Herald's Food section.

Alex: I have never been to the Kendall Ale House. But the Doral Ale House on Tuesday night was just abismal. What do we call Doral people? DOralittes? Doralians? Doraleros?

And were mortals too! hahah

Val: I'm as consistent with my rules as you are with your vulgarities.

Big difference between a private citizen flipping off a despicable anti-American leftist, and a city mayor sucker-punching and knocking out a stupid Hialean in public, Rick.

Carlos Miller said...

As a Colombian-American democrat who hopes Raul Martinez wins in a landslide against Diaz-Balart, I have to point out that punching a citizen is Assault and Battery.

While flicking off a group of women on a public street, no matter who they are, is protected under the First Amendment.

Robert: "Stupid Hialeahan?" Wow, now if that isn't painting an entire community in a broad brush, I don't know what is.

See, Robert, one of the problems with the hardliner thinking process is that they believe that any behavior on their part is justified and okay as long as it supports their positions. Throwing punches, harassing folks, cursing, flipping off people and, in some cases, killing others, is justified as long as it's done to express their point of view. They can't seem to grasp that the rules of society, and in Henry's case, what determines whether a certain behavior is "classy," applies to them just like they apply it to others.

Using the hardliner mindset, a "classy" move on my part would be taking a dump on Rush Limbaugh's front doorstep because I think he's an idiot. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, it's okay because I have made the determination that Rush is a jerk.

Life isn't like that, Robert. There are standards. And just because two grown men think that standing on a street corner and flipping off women is suitable conduct, doesn't make it so.

Rick,

Please tell me how calling someone a stupid Hialeahan is broadbrushing an entire community. The only person I'm referring to as "stupid" is the Hialeahan standing on the Palmetto Expressway on that
fateful evening.

The rest of your comment veers totally away from your post and subsequent comments. Of course, you have to exaggerate and point out extreme examples (violence, crapping on Rush's doorstep) to prove your point and somehow make your comparison valid.

Listen, if you want to call flipping off someone a classless gesture, fine. Be my guest. But to compare it to an elected city official, a MAYOR, assaulting a private citizen is, putting it quite mildly, a stretch.

I don't know, Robert, you tell me...if I to look at a clip from the Code Pink protests and say, "Jeez, look at that stupid Little Havana resident shouting and yelling," would that be the least bit offensive?

My comment went towards trying to explain how hardliners tend to legitimize their own behaviors and then criticize those same behaviors when exhibited by someone whose positions they don't agree with.

It's okay for them to take action to keep a retailer from selling an item with a Che image on it, it's not okay for the Castro regime to prevent people from wearing a bracelet. It's okay to shout down and harass women who are expressing their views in Little Havana, it's not okay for the Castro agents to harass and shout down women who are expressing their views in Havana.

In this case, it's wrong for a Dem to hit a guy, but it's okay for a Republican to flip off women. Why? Because, one act is being committed by a Dem and the other by CA Republicans who are, naturally, right. Of course.

Assaulting someone and flipping off someone are both "classless" acts, Robert, in my book. Raul Martinez and Henry Gomez could pass wind in the same room and I would consider both to be classless guys, no matter what their status in life.

No. It would be obvious that you're referring to someone who happens to be from Little Havana who did something stupid. At least that would be my thought process, unless yours has more malicious intentions, which only you would be able to identify.

As for the rest of your comment, I'm not going to reiterate what I've already written since we're just going to go round and round and it's too nice of a day to stay glued to a computer screen arguing about this. Trying to equate the two actions you specifically mentioned in your post, no matter how classless either or both may or may not be, just makes no sense to me.

Rick said...

I suppose I'm a little more sensitive in that area. I feel the same way if someone would say, "Look at that stupid American," but I guess that's just me.

You're right, we are just going to go round and round. Good choice. I'm with you.
